Default [REL] DD Benham and DD Benson Destroyer

Hello Captains

here you can get 2 new Destroyer-types for your SH4-Fleet.

1.) The Benham Class Destroyer

2.) The Benson Class Destroyer

Both Vessels are integrated in one Mod.

Installing :

If you wanne use this Ships in your SH4 Version you first have
to make a copy of your names-file in your roster-directory
and copy it to the roster-directory in this mod.

Then you have to add following lines to the Name-File below
the entry DDSomers=Destroyer Somers Class

DDBenham=Destroyer Benham Class
DDBenson=Destroyer Benson Class

After this is done you can enable this Mod via JSGME !

Download :

http://www.aotd-flottille.de/Maddy/SH4/US_DD.rar

This Units are made out of the Somers-Class with Wings3D and S3D-Tool.
Special Thanks to Skwas for his great S3D !

Enjoy them.....

Default Gleaves class

Beautiful, good work.

My father-in-law was on a Gleaves class DD.

The only easy way of differentiating the two new classes from one another was that the Bensons had flat-sided stacks while the Gleaves’ were round.
The two classes were similar designs prepared by two sources, Bethlehem (Benson) and Gibbs & Cox, (Gleaves) with small numbers of ships authorized in each fiscal year.
As the war threat increased, the Navy ordered repeat builds of the two classes.
All these repeat ships were ordered with only four 5" mounts due to severe topweight problems with the initial ships with the #3 5" mount being replaced with an AA mount. Ships in service had their #3 mount removed during refits.

With a little change you could add a Gleaves class with 4 5" mounts.

In case you're interested, someone on modelwarships.com built a fine diorama that includes my favorite "Benson" class, the "USS Laffey":

http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews...0-dp/title.htm

The "Laffey's" famous for attacking the Japanese Battleship "Hiei" single-handedly during the night battle off Guadalcanal. She machine gunned the bridge & killed the BB's captain - only to get blown out of the water by 14" shells and a torpedo.

Very nice.

Do you know how to add pennant numbers on the bow? That's one thing I have always wanted for Silent Hunter warships.

@ iambecomelife

You can make them with little 3D-Modells and colour them white.
Thats very easy.

If you're interested in the details, here is a close-up picture of the turrets of a Benson class DD:

And more at the source it came from.
http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/431.htm

And here is a close-up of the turret on a Gearing class, which was an Allan M. Sumner stretched to hold more fuel:

The framing gets missed a lot. I'm not sure, but I'm betting the 5" turrets on American battleships had the same external framing.
