Default AI too simple-minded?

Hi guys,

I was just messing around and making a test mission for a friend who wanted to try out SH4 for the first time. I made a simple convoy of 2 carriers with 6 escort destroyers around it. 2 in front, 2 at the sides and 2 at the flanks with the carriers in a line. The player is approximately 10km southwest of the convoy heading north while the convoy is heading west.

My friend who has no previous SH or subsim experience proceeds to destroy the mission:

-My friend does not know how to properly aim the torpedos, he simply sets it at 0 degrees of 180 degrees depending on if he wants to fire the bow or aft torpedoes. From then on, he just navigates the sub into a position that he feels is proper for engagement and fires the torpedoes based on feeling.
-He keeps his periscope up at all times regardless
-He does not even use silent running
-His strategy basically involved running at flank speed past the destroyers at periscope depth, and firing a straight salvo of torpedoes at one of the carrier's from a close range.
-In the end he was able to take out 1 carrier with a salvo of 6 torpedoes, a destroyer suicided against him by ramming the ship over the sub, and disabled the 2nd carrier by maneuvering under the carrier and surfacing directly beneath it, somehow taking out the props in the process. Finally he proceeds to use the deck gun to engage any remaining ships getting sunk in the process but not without putting a few rounds into the carrier and a few destroyers.
-Although the destroyers were pinging him for a long duration, they were never able to get a long enough fix on him to take him out with depth charges or anything else. He was able to sail right past them without a problem and engage the carriers. Even after he surfaced he was able to survive quite a while with some luck due to being directly beside the carrier using it as a shield.

I had the ships all set to elite crew rating. The ships were approximately 1 km apart from the carriers. Also I am running RFB2.0 with RSRDC at 100% realism except with the external camera enabled. I am not sure if I did something wrong or if the AI is really this terrible? I was very surprised at how well he was able to speed right by the destroyers and take out the ships while sustaining minimal damage until he allowed himself to be destroyed.

EDIT: I have been running the mission myself trying out a similar tactic and I find this is about a 50-50 chance of success. On occasion the destroyers will successfully intercept but usually within a range where I could already fire off my torpedoes had I not been using the 0 bearing guess work fire. I am still able to slip by quite easily at flank speed-periscope depth with the destroyers tailing me pinging all the way and unleash my barrage of torpedoes. I still don't know what is causing this.

this is a game related issue and not really anything you did in creating the mission.

posting this in the sh4 mods section might get you some advice on things to tweak or maybe there is an AI mod you can use.
