Default RFB bugs; or, Hobson's choice. AAARGH

Got a little dilemma (and apologies if these issues have been thoroughly sorted elsewhere). Recently acquired SH4 and, separately, U-Boat Missions, so as to make sure I'm properly patched up to 1.5 as most mods require these days.

Right, first up: RFB 2.0 (and associated 23Apr2010 patch). For some reason, on my machine at least, contact reports don't show the enemy's course. Whether it's the single-contact squares on the main map screen or the radioman reporting a task force, it doesn't seem to matter: latitude and longitude are all present and correct, and even speed, but not course. I did some experimenting, and original SH4 doesn't have this problem, nor does it appear with U-Boat Missions; it only manifests in RFB 2.0 - with or without patch, doesn't seem to matter, alas. Obviously, this makes finding convoys/task forces etc. next to impossible unless you accidentally trip over them (rare, and a mite tedious).

Couldn't seem to find anybody who'd had this issue (much less fixed it), so I tried RFB 1.52 - yes, a step back, but worth it (I thought) if it fixed the problem. It did, but at a cost - namely, CTD when running at high TC's *after* sinking a few ships. Not remotely an issue heading west, but once I've sunk a few ships and want to head home, anything over about 2560 causes slowdown, and trying to go above 3584 causes a crash. Tried the 4GB patch tool, didn't make a difference. Also, this issue didn't appear once when I was playing RFB 2.0.

So that, good fellows (and fellowesses), is my dilemma. Play RFB 2.0 and only ever find singles and pairs that I accidentally blunder into; or play RFB 1.52, with niggly performance issues and a few other irritants that were evidently fixed in 2.0. What really has me stumped is that no-one else appears to have had my 2.0 contact report issue, which suggests it's something *I'm* doing, but I'm stuffed if I know what. I'm not running lots of mods, and I tested a "clean" 2.0 install (ie SH4 1.5 with RFB 2.0 and nothing else) and it still showed up. Not sure how much more - or rather less - I can do.

Apologies for the lengthy essay, and any suggestions gratefully received; I really don't want to give up on SH4, but I'm getting fed up, and TMO's apparently superhuman escorts don't really sound like my bag...

I haven't run RFB, So I don't have any first hand experience, just have a thought...

The radio reports of the contact does NOT give a course? (<- if I read your post correctly then the answer is yes.)

Does the map have the "TAIL" on the contact? Or, where the map contancts removed?
(The big red radio contacts, not the real time "I see you" contacts.)

IF the map shows the radio contacts with the "tails", then you could use that to determine course.
At least enough to get an idea of where they go.

I realize it's not ideal, but maybe it might help temporarily.

You've read my post correctly :-) and alas, no tails on the contacts :-(
I like the idea, and I'd use it if I could, but sadly not an option...

Any other takers?

And this is why I don't like reading in a hurry unless it is on a page, in a book...

The lines blur together and I miss details!!!

Sorry to suggest something that you already ruled out!

I may have to do a bit of copy-paste and get a second instance of SH4 and test this out myself...

No need to apologise, just glad somebody's taking an interest

It's a weird one, most other issues I've had with this (or with SH3 for that matter) have also affected other people and thus led to patches - or at least lengthy discussion...but this seems to be a unique case. Strange, not to mention annoying!

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything, and redownloading RFB? That’s all I can think of

I’m not sure if anyone who made RFB is still active on these forums, but it could be worth getting in touch.

Most realism mods do not have the "tails" on the contacts. a lot of them don't even use the top-down silhouettes. It's just a dot that sails in a direction and its up to you to chase it down and analyze its course and type. There's certain textures that you can disable in the mod itself to keep that from happening. It's not a bug, its a feature, seriously!

Sledgehammer427 is correct.

With the infinite wisdom of a few (actually the "one" who uploaded the mod to his thread) thought removing any idea of showing what direction a target is moving in was a good idea. Even though if you wanted to put your "big boy" pants on, you could easily remove any contact on the Nav Map with the Enabling of "No Map Update" in the "options" menu?!? So, there's a little scribbled "dot" that distinguishes a target on the map instead of a ship looking silhouette, with tails removed when at less zoomed map scales.

Nothing wrong with RFB, it's as the "one" planned. I should know, I'm still around from my team membership of RFB days.

May I suggest Fotrs Ultimate as an alternative mod for the Stock game?? Version 0.75 is just about ready to be released. The one nice thing about Ultimate is there are still folks working on it, unlike the other major mods. You can still get answers from the guys who are working on it, and we're happy to take suggestions!

Ahoy @jonny_bass26!

If you want to stay with RFB, you might find the following interesting:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As an alternative to FortsU Beta, you can also try my mod compilation for SH4 V1.5.
It is a self-contained, large and extensive ModPack, which is easy to install and the game difficulty can be gradually adjusted.

For consideration here is a criticism of propbeanie:
