Well U boats fought mainly in the Atlantic While American, Subs fought in the pacific which is a lot bigger than the Atlantic ocean. So American subs had bigger operational range.
In general, German Submarines had a better Underwater range (I think) they were generally smaller but more maneuverable, and could dive faster than American subs. Because German subs were small they had less torpedoes, then American subs. But German submarines could dive way faster and deeper than American subs

Germany had mainly these classes
Type II its small sub only with 3 torpedeo tubes its used for coastal porpuses
Type VII was bigger had a moderate range 8,500 nmi 15,700 km,had 88m deck gun has 4 bow torpdeos tubes .
Type IX these were long range u boats of germany where operational range was about 12000 miles depending on Modification.
Type XXI well this sub hasnt ever seen combat but she had underwater speed of 18knots whats more then double the speed then normal subs. She is a wunderwaffen

everyone has diffrent taste in Submarines just like ice cream flavours. I prefer German U boats.

I don't know much about American subs what I know that they have bigger range more torpedeos slow diving shallow depth comparing to german ones.
American subs had better sensors like radars

While I play with u boats missions I 've noticed something like radar signal detected.
What is that?
I don't remember it from Silent hunter 3.
Oh and is there any tutorial for the manual targeting? It is very different from US boats.

Also when radar came to U boats?
Yeah type XXI was a technological miracle that time.

More linkies!:

Manual targetting in the uboat isn't that much different from the US. The principal is the same, but the Fleet Boats had the PK. Rockin Robbins has a couple of vids on ToobYoo, as do others.

There are some differences, and it was mentioned not too long ago, if I can find that link...

One thing to keep in mind when comparing German to American submarines is to not lose perspective. The USN Submarine Force was comprised primarily of long range ocean going subs that were initially designed to act as forward deployed scouts to a battleship group. Once the war broke out though, they were the only ones immediately available to take the fight to the Japanese. Doing so by using the German tactic of unrestricted submarine warfare. So the design mission changed and they were still able to carry out their new mission effectively.

Now the Germans were fighting not only in a completely different theater, but their enemies were much closer to home. Many fall into the trap of comparing the Type VII to the Gato/Balao class, it's a textbook case of apples to oranges. And by some fervent u-boat fans is used exclusively to demonstrate the u-boats superiority. If any comparison is to be made it should be strictly limited to the Type IX vs the Gato/Balao, as the Type IX was designed for power projection over a longer distance and time frame and is comparable in design mission and characteristics.

Now wikipedia is pretty good about the stats regarding the fleet boats as it references Norman Friedmans research. Not sure about the u-boat information there though.
