The only objections I have come when I (rarely) have run into a situation like I described above, and also a few instances where, despite being beneath the thermocline and at a depth of more than 500 feet, the Japanese escorts seem able to hear me perfectly and depth charge me accurately. Both seem contrary to the history I have read. Like I said, I love the difficulty, I just want it to be historical. Keep up the good work!
You have to keep in mind that we are in the tradition of Ducimus. We're not a realism mod because realism isn't possible within the game. We're a difficulty mod.

When we're done players will be able to choose their difficulty, and even change it during a cruise as suits their fancy.

Default FOTRS - s18 early war observations

hey robbin,
the berbster talked me into playing.63 again and i found a couple of interesting things. i am not complaining....these are observations.

driving an s-18 out of manila, december-january 1941-2.
s18 has no AA however if you accidentally hit the go-to-flak-station boom CTD. is there a way to sense/disarm the go-to-flak-station when the unit does not have a flak station but re-arm it if you survive long enough to drive an updated sub which has that station? i thought i saw that in a different mod (GFO?) but i cannot remember.

s18 equipment includes early SD-radar at start and it functions during mission. later, during refit, the SD is not displayed in the equipment section....not that i want to change it and there will no upgrades to it but i cannot figure out how it can be on-board and not display.

i have some excellent screen shots for you but i'll put them in a separate post.

Default Early war screen shots

got some early war screen shots of ships burning/sinking. excellent graphics BTW.

i got two torpedos into this ISE and there she is steaming away, down by the stern and listing to starboard. i have another one of here from the stern. here.

she and another ISE took two each and sailed away on me. !#$%^&*

last photo is of a KONGO. i slammed my last three into her just as a DD is passing close aboard...trying to race over and kill me. well, the secondaries got the DD, little yellow !@#$%^. i did NOT get credit for the DD. I'll have to talk to JANAC if i survive this thing. lmao.

As for the AA station, are you referring to using the <F11> key, or the menu button at the bottom? I've been trying the last little while to get mine to bomb, trying different combinations of boat, crew and equipment, and I'm wondering what the circumstances are, as close as you can get to them? In other words, are you modifying the crew? Updating any guns, etc., before you go out? Have you tried the station while in port before leaving and see if it does it? With that, I'm wondering about the use of Time Compression, and how much you may have used, and also whether you've crash dived your boat, or even just a regular dive? The biggest Q of all: Do you have any other mods installed? What mod were you playing previous to FotRSU again?

As for the radar, CapnScurvy or others would have to give you the low-down on it, but all of the radars are tied together, and they only display two of three that might be available. You'll even see the screens of the equipment that was never put on an S boat... one of the limitations of SH4...

my apologies for not including my system details and mod list. i always forget.
OS=Win7 8GB RAM SH4 1.5 from CDROM with LAA activated

Playing SH4 1.5 totally reinstalled from previously played mod which was OM.

1_FalloftheRisingSun_Ultimate_v0.63_PublicBeta_EN
2_410 Rockin Robbins EZ Plot V2.0
3_Bigger Better Protractors
4_3000 Meter Bearing Tool (1920x)
5_MTBChangesforFOTRS (command.cfg and special abilities only)

the first time the CTD occurred was totally unexpected and i cannot remember how i activated it, probably F8. after that i went looking for it and i pressed the F8 key while i was at the patrol start point. i believe the next time, i double-clicked on the icon while i was at the patrol start point. there are no crew assigned to the AA guns because the boat does not have AA guns and there are no crew positions for AA guns.

there is no TC in play because i was at the start of the patrol.
i think i answered your questions. if not, let me know what you need to know that i know but you dont know. (i have been reading john cleese and i think it has been rubbing off on me)

Try backing off the #5 mod, and see if it still does it. There is no specific "AA" station in Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate. You go to the 50 cal machine gun. That "MTBChangesforFOTRS (command.cfg and special abilities only)" has "FOTRS" in its title, but no "U" for Ultimate... there are differences between the two.

If I'm misunderstanding you Mark, please forgive me, but I've been on a third computer now, trying to get what you got, and on all three, this is the basic set-up:

1. Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate v0.63, as downloaded from here
2. Bigger Better Protractors, which is the only other mod I have that matches yours

I'm like 99.9% certain that RR's Plot mod and the 3k Bearing Tool function as intended in the game also.

I started with wiping the Save folder to clear all my other stuff, then re-set all the screen and gameplay stuff:

started a new career:

Went in and made certain of all of my Gameplay settings etc. in the Captain's Office, then checked the equipment, of which the 50 cal machine gun is automatically there:

Checked the crew assignments, no blank spots (except the usual Damage Control Team):

Start a patrol and F12 for an external view, and all looks good:

<F> keyed my way around the boat, all function as intended, including:

... and I can zoom in with the "aimer" for "detail" work

As you can see, I'm one of the best water shooters in the USN:

I even did it all over again and bought the 20mm and went through it all over again, and I can honestly say, the clouds run away when I'm at the station:

In other words, in a mostly stock FotRSU trim on my 3 computers, no matter which way I go to the AA Gun position on a Sugar boat at Manila, it goes there, whether by the menu buttons, or the <F> key...

yes you have it except the thing is: i never had an AA gun on my S-boat. it was not available to me and did not appear in the SO&E. however because a key was defined to take me to that station and i accidentally fat-fingered it when i hit the F7, i was awarded the order of the CTD.

how in the hell did you get an AA gun and i did not? i still stand for the national anthem.
seriously, i rarely if ever use that weapon but i was more concerned with preventing the CTD which you wont experience because you actually have an AA gun.

But that's what I'm getting at, it should be on the boat from the get-go, with the 20mm as an option. Back off the #5 mod, clear your Save folder (you could copy and / or move the files temporarily), start a new career, and try and see if the gun and personnel come back.

Same here as propbeanie said.......The S-18 has an AA gun, the 50 cal machine gun....if yours doesn't......you've got mod soup!! You may think you don't.....but you do!

Hey guys, is there some sort of universal features list for your mod? I ask because I have been trying to work my way through this thread, im to page 58 so far, but it is really time consuming. I probably have a good idea of most of the content of the mod between the thread and playing it quite a lot since d/l it several weeks ago, but it still might shine light on things I may have missed, and also there are some people interested in it on another forum I frequent and I would like to pass on to them. Thanks.

In your game folder, under the Support folder root has a few ReadMe type files. The old FotRS Original folder has several, and then there's the FOTRSU2.0 folder that has several also. Most of these are just "notes", but the "Using Radar_Sonar.pdf", "FOTRS_vCombo_ReadMe.rtf", and the "Air, Sea & Submarine for FOTRS Ultimate© [Master Copy].xlsx" files are probably the most helpful. Most of the others "build" on that info. We hope to have a pdf like the Radar instructions for the whole mod before it's all over, said and done with... - RR may come along and post his bullet points again, which are just a few pages back (well, less than 50 pages anyway) from the last time.

Thanks, propbeanie. I will take a look at the files you suggested.

Through reading this thread I have found myself wanting to help out. I don't have modding experience, but am good at research and written communication (Bachelor's in History). If you guys ever need that or think it would be useful, hit me up.

One thing that would be very helpful would be if someone posts a problem like Mark Bonamer, who for some weird reason thinks his S-boat should have an AA gun on it (???), when you see enough information, and he always supplies lots of information, you could load up the same configuration they have and see if you encounter the same effects.

It's always helpful for different people to try the same things and see if they encounter the same issues. That helps us a lot with fixing things.
