While looking for a copy of Tameichi Hara's WWII memoir I found this:


He sank another submarine after detecting it at night when he saw a sailor on the surface light a cigarette four kilometers away.


Smoking is bad for you, for a lot of reasons.

First thing you learn in reconnaissance forces is how to smoke undetectably. After a while you learn that there is no such way.
