Default Allied units in combat?

Other than the Quick Missions, which I imagine appear as set-piece battles in career mode,, do Allied forces ever participate in combat onscreen? I've seen enemy ships sinking on radar, but always beyond visual range.

Also, what's up with high-speed, long range Task Forces consisting of nothing but four destroyers? They're not behaving like H-K groups, so I assumed they're either deadheading or escorts who've lost their charges continuing on. Does the game consider DD cruising speeds to be "High"?

I never saw one in the stock game career mode, so I made my own;

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=4358

Video;

One big flaw, credit for the sinking. Shoot 8 torpedoes into a battleship, dead in the water, on fire, listing 45 degrees. While reloading a PT boat comes by and shoots a few rounds from a .50 cal M2, which is just enough to finish off the "hit points" and down she goes. Sub gets zero credit, 30,000 tone BB sunk by allied PT boat.

So the trick to that mod is to avoid firing at any enemy who is already being fired at by an allied ship, waste of torpedoes. Lots of action though, purely fictional invasion of Manila Bay, with enemy and allied planes completely ignoring each other but attacking enemy ships. One time IJN BB was damaged by 5 USN TBD torpedo bombers just before I got in range, and my first hit sank it.

Probably other mods do something similar, but mine is the only one I know of designed for lots of action in a career.

Second question, Data\Cfg\Contacts.cfg controls that, in stock 1.4 for warships;

0 to 0.1 knots = stationary
0.1 to 8 knots = slow
8 to 19 knots = medium
19 to 35 knots = fast
Over 35 knots = very fast (usually one of them evil dadblasted newfangled areoflying machine contraptions that drop bombs on you!)

Can be edited in notepad.
