Yeah, it's instant. I saw a special once a long time ago that explained it.

Basically, if you were in an area that did not crush for some odd reason the water would just appear all around you instantly.
One second you were dry talking to someone next milli-second you were underwater, the pressure is so great you can't exhale to scream,
you just black out, that's it.
It still scares the living Sheri out of me.

I recall reading about explosive decompression a couple of years ago. It was a news article about an accident aboard a oil rig in the North Sea area (roughly).

Iirc, what happened was that a diver decompression chamber aboard an oil rig had somehow decompressed violently, as the chamber door had accidentally been opened or breeched somehow.

I noticed details about how the few people inside perished. Iirc, the ones close to the chamber opening experienced fatal explosive decompression and the bodies were mutilated so to speak. The ones deeper inside the chamber had a different complication, with the pressure squezing the fat in the body into the arteries, turning the blood into goo if I understood it correctly.

I believe a couple of people right outside the chamber opening died as well. Don't know what happened them.

Thinking of the crush depth implosion event, I suppose that the people inside would experience some kind of fatal complication and not simply drown. It all sounds so trivial until one get to learn the gritty details. Having said this, I have no knowledge about what might happen on a imploding submarine.

You'd likely not feel anything, it would be very quick. Think being in a multi storey building that collapses on top of you, but it happens much, much faster.

- Can't get the gramophone or radio to work, and there's sound files for both in the data-folder.

Maybe you can store the save games after all in your PC?

Well now we know what the death scene will be.

As stated before by the Devs, the save is both on your drive and the server.

It's actually illegal for them to be releasing the game early like this, and the stores can even get sued pretty bad by the companies for it. It's not like Ubi is holding the game back -- just that some places aren't paying attention and drop the game before release date. The reality is that most places (especially big chains) are probably not going to release it. Don't blame Ubi because half a dozen stores in the boonies can't read a release date :P

This means that the pirates have a hold of it, I'll bet, which means the new DRM is already being put to the test. It had better be damn well worth it.

I'm one of those people who got to benefit from Canadian stores releasing SH5 early. Envy me!

So far my experiences have been pretty positive, though I've barely scratched the surface. Here are my initial observations.

The graphics are very impressive. The water feels very real, especially when walking on the deck of the u-boot.

  • The beginning of the game starts, as you know, with the war being declared. It's a cinematic intro, somewhat reminiscent of Das Boot. You quickly sink some ships as a tutorial and you're on your way.
  • One flaw is that people don't move out of your way when you walk around the boat, as seen in the scripted scenes. It's not a huge issue, as crew are usually standing out of the way, but some, like the engineer, are in the middle of the corridor and you end up "clipping" through them. This ghosting does take away from the feeling that you're really there, so for immersion reasons I hope a suitable move-the-hell-out-of-the-way animation is patched or modded in.
  • Interface-wise, though I understand where people are coming from when they want it to be period-looking, it's not really a big issue for me, and it seems relatively intuitive. Though maybe I haven't dug deep enough yet.
  • The HUD at the bottom left serves as a easy shortcut for setting depth/speed. With the ctrl key pressed, the HUD changes to allow for a more precise setting (ie. specific depths instead of periscope/surface, and specific speeds instead of slow, flank).
  • The crew's voices sound less robotic. Less unnatural pauses between numbers ala SHIII/IV
Here are some screens. Anti-aliasing is off (turning it up requires a game restart, and I didn't want to waste the time). My FPS, as you can see, is excellent, but is strained somewhat in the control room. (My system is Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 4 gigs RAM, Nvidia GTX 260 Core 216, Win7 x64). 1680x1050 game resolution and high graphics settings.

The key layout

Nice underwater effects.

Status report

I'm not the most experienced Silent Hunter captain, but I'll do my best to answer any questions you have

Who cares about the release date and illegal selling. At least, they are selling and i`m one of them who took profit or, UbiSoft took profit of my 50.00$

So far, the rpg part of SHV remind me a bit of the B52 Mighty Eight simulator from Microprose.

So far, the graphic is really the biggest improvement from the previous version.

The only bug i had so far is in the intro mission, when you have two sink the second wave of ships. They are just popping out of nowhere. Beside that, it`s an awesome upgrade from the previous versions.

I really hope you guys are right!

If there's only few minor bugs, I'm gonna laugh big time
