Her final fate still saddens me a bit (she's been cut up, painted, and exhibited in pieces), but I suppose it's still better than being discarded

If it is easier to get more people to visit it.. to learn about this aspect of history.. to perhaps foster in the younglings an interest in submarine history, they can slice it up in to as many pieces as they want.

Just taking the good with the bad...and a little prejudice since my daughter has a MA in Museum Science and is involved in the $heer drudgery of keeping an institution going...This is fabulous work as it presents a rare artifact otherwise on the bottom of the ocean to the paying viewing public.

...and in decidedly better condition than when found. Naturally, with U-505 in Chicago and the USS Pampanito in San Francisco, rusting badly in the salt air and water, as my examples, cutting up would appear to be sad; yet warships are now built as modules to begin with. People walking through an artifact- literally a time capsule-create damage if only from breath exhalation and the subs were never designed to be permanent to begin with. This display allows for viewing with no damaging walk-through and, as with the U-505, my only real concern is that a roof will be necessary before weather/salt air causes further deterioration. With the diamond saw work, the artifact can actually be restored any time in another venue as with the U-505. Absolute KUDOS to the Brits for a brilliant, accessible display on this one!

We'll probably get few more

members out of it too!

Great pictures, thanks for posting them fireftr. Wished it could have been left intact but people seem to like the exhibits at Birkenhead.

Pity they couldn't have at least lined her sections up bow to stern. That way you would get a better grasp of her size and design. Assume location restrictions.

I'm sure they have plaques up to show the sub in better days but I agree with lining her up but I'm sure there were as you said, space restrictions.
