Default Guitarist Dick Dale, Originator of surf music passes away at 83

Guitarist and surfer, Dick Dale has passed away. Dick Dale was a true originator. The beach Boys

Quote:
His fingering style was so frenetic that he shredded guitar picks during songs, a technique that forced him to stash spares on his guitar's body. "Better shred than dead," he liked to joke, an expression that eventually became the title of a 1997 anthology released by Rhino Records.

Dale said he developed his musical style when he sought to merge the sounds of the crashing ocean waves he heard while surfing with melodies inspired by the rockabilly music he loved. He pounded rather than plucked the strings of his guitar in a style he said he borrowed from an early musical hero, the great jazz drummer Gene Krupa.

"Dale pioneered a musical genre that Beach Boy Brian Wilson and others would later use as the basis for their music.,

Quote: " Rolling Stone magazine said in its "Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll" adding "Let's Go Trippin'" was released in 1961, two months ahead of the Beach Boys' first hit, "Surfin.'"

One of Dick Dale's signature songs. This is pipeline with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Dick Dale.

Rest in Peace Dick. Thanks for the great music and showing us how it's done.

* Jim, try this link and see if this opens. With regards to the other song I posted, go to you tube and put in, Dick Dale-Miserlou. Please let me know if it's working. My apologies to everyone for the link to the song not working.

Dick Dale was left-handed and originally tried to play right-handed guitars, but gave up and used left-handed guitars; however, he left his guitars strung as if they were right-handed models, meaning the guitar strings were 'upside-down', with the bass strings on the bottom of the fretboard rather than at the top (This is also how Albert King, another leftie, played his guitars). Dale also use string of a massive heavy gauge, giving his sound its deep rumbling nature...

Dale's most well known hit, Misirlou, was Dlae's adaptation of a very popular, and much covered/adapted Middle Eastern composition, with the title literally meaning "Egyptian Girl":

Dale's Middle Eastern family background influenced much of his playing style and made him distinctive among surf guitar players...

There were an awful lot of beginning guitar players in the early 60s who cut their teeth (and not a few fingers) trying to get that 'Dick Dale Sound'. The long list of later pro guitarists who have cited Dick Dale as an influence is a testament to his place in music history...

RIP, Dick Dale, and get those angels to start double-picking on their harps...
