Clan Macvey (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel 0.5 nautical miles (930 m) off Anvil Point, Dorset by SM UB-57 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of seven of her crew.
HMT Michael Clements (Royal Navy) The naval trawler was rammed and sunk in the English Channel off St. Catherine's Point, Isle of Wight by HMT John Cattling ( Royal Navy). Her crew survived.
Sydland (Sweden) The cargo ship was sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 100 nautical miles (190 km) off the Nantucket Lightship ( United States Navy),[50] (43°30′N 65°23′W), by SM U-156 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.
SM UC-49 (Kaiserliche Marine) The Type UC II submarine was depth charged and sunk in the English Channel off Start Point, Cornwall, (50°20′N 3°30′W) United Kingdom by HMS Opossom ( Royal Navy) with the loss of all 31 crew.
SMS V68 (Kaiserliche Marine) The V25-class destroyer struck a mine and sank in the North Sea off the coast of Belgium with the loss of eighteen of her crew.

On the first day of the Battle of Amiens, Allied forces advance 7 miles on a 20-mile front against the Germans, taking around 16,000 German prisoners. German General Ludendorff calls it “the black day of the German Army.”

Second Battle of Lassigny begins.

British occupy Morlancourt and reach Lihons (2 miles from Chaulnes).

French 3rd Army advances on Montdidier from north and south, capturing Assainvillers (on south) and Pierrepont (on north).

News of arrest of Messrs. Lockhart (British Consul-General at Moscow) and Wardrop (British Consul) by Bolsheviks.

He will survive the war and return to São Paulo, becoming the head of the Central Office of the Companhia de Terras Norte Paraná. He will also serve as a leading member of the São Paulo Athletic Club until his death in 1987.

Western Front

French retake Montdidier.

The First United States Army is formed in France under the command of General Pershing, as sufficient American manpower has arrived to the Western Front.

Naval

French troopship SS Polynesien is sunk by the German submarine SM UC-22, resulting in 19 deaths. The ship was carrying Serbian soldier Milunka Savić, one of the most decorated female soldiers in history, who survived.

Shortly after this Löwenhardt and German pilot Alfred Wenz collide. Wenz bails out safely, but Löwenhardt's parachute fails to open and he falls 12,000 feet to his death. Wenz will survive the war without ever scoring an aerial victory and live until 1969.

1220 German ace Rudolf Berthold, flying a Fokker D.VII, shoots down a DH.9 for victory number 43.

1230 Rudolf Berthold scores his second kill of the day, shooting down DH.9 B9344 for victory number 44. 2nd Lt H. Hartley and Sgt O.D. Beetham, 49 Sqdn RAF, are both taken prisoner. Berthold's plane is severely damaged and crashes into a house. He survives but will never fly in combat again. After the war Berthold puts together a Freikorps of 1,200 men to fight the Communists in Lithuania. They failed, and on March 15,1920 a mob attacked Berthold. Legend has it that he was strangled with his own Pour le Merite, but it seems more likely that Rudolf Berthold was shot to death with his personal sidearm.

1120 English RAF ace pilot John Gurdon and ace observer Charles Gass, flying Bristol F.2b E2454, shoot dwon a Fokker D.VII, Victory number 28 for Gurdon; number 39 for Gass. This is the last aerial victory for both men. John Everard Gurdon will survive the war and go on to a career as journalist, novelist and translator. during the Second World war he will serve as a flying instructor and even manage a few raids as front gunner on Vickers Wellington Bombers. He will live until 1973. Charles George Gass will also survive the war, and be in and out of military service twice, the second time serving from 1940 until his retirement in 1954. His 39 victories will make him the highest-scoring non-pilot ace ever.

1200 German ace Ulrich Neckel, with Jasta 19, shoots down Sopwithh Camel D9642 for victory number 22. Maj C.D. Booker, 201 Sqdn RAF, is killed.

1352 American pilot Field Kindley, in Sopwith Camel D8245, 148th Aero Sqdn (attaced to the RAF), shoots down a Fokker D.VII for victory number 4. German 40-victory ace Lothar von Richthofen is wounded for the third time. This wound will keep him in the hospital until the end of the war. He will continue his career in aviation. On July 4, 1922, Lothar Siegfried Freiherr von Richthofen will die in the crash of an LVG C.VI converted to carry passengers. Actress Fern Andra and director Georg Bluen will survive the crash.

1720 German ace Otto Fruhner, with Jasta 26, shoots down SE.5a D6979 for victory number 15. Lt J.R. Anderson, 60 Sqdn RAF, is killed.

Aviation

French flying ace René Fonck shot down three German aircraft in ten seconds in a head-on attack, with all three crashing within 100 meters (328 feet) of one another near Roye, Somme, France.


Ship Losses:

Dorothy B. Barrett (United States) The five-masted schooner was shelled and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 6.5 nautical miles (12.0 km) off the North East End Lightship ( United States Navy) (38°54′N 74°34′W) by SM U-117 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.
SM UB-57 (Kaiserliche Marine) The Type UB III submarine struck a mine and sank in the North Sea off the Belgian coast and sank with the loss of all 34 crew.
SM UB-103 (Kaiserliche Marine) The Type UB III submarine departed Zeebrugge, West Flanders, Belgium on patrol. She subsequently struck a mine and sank with the loss of all 37 crew.
Wallsend (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea 1 nautical mile (1.9 km) south east of Robin Hood's Bay, Yorkshire by SM UB-104 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.

0600 Two English RAF Camel pilots share a victory over a DFW C.V:
Rupert Gifford, victory number 3.
Edwaard Johnstone, victory number 17.

1010 Two RAF SE.5a pilots share a victory over a Halberstadt two-seater:
Ernest Hoy, Canada, D6947, victory number 2.
Christoffel Venter, South Africa, D6965, victory number 16.

1015 French ace Henri Hay de Slade, with Spa 159, shoots down an "Enemy Aircraft" for victory number 12.

1110 French ace René Fonck, in a SPAD XIII, shoots down a German two-seater for victory number 58.

1120 René Fonck scores his second and third kills of the day, shooting down two more two-seaters for nictories number 59 and 60. The legend of "Three in ten seconds" is probably just that, but whatever the case he did bring down three enemy planes in very short order.

1200 German ace Hermann Becker, flying with Jasta 12, shoots down an SE.5a for victory number 13.

1205 German ace Ulrich Neckel, with Jasta 19, shoots down SE.5a C1888 for victory number 23. Lt H.A. O'Shea, 92 Sqdn RAF, is taken prisoner.

1215 German ace Johannes Klein, with Jasta 15, shoots down a Bréguet 14 for victory number 14.

1840 German ace Franz Büchner, with Jasta 13, shoots down a Sopwith Camel for victory number 17.

1900 German ace Ernst Udet, in a Fokker D.VII, shoots down Bristol F.2b C852 for victory number 54. Lt A.R. Stedman and 2nd Lt G.R. Howard, 88 Sqdn RAF, are both taken prisoner.

German ace Otto Könnecke, flying with Jasta 5, shoots down a Bristol F.2b for victory number 30.

German ace Bruno Loerzer, in a Fokker Dr.I, shoots down an SE.5a for victory number 31.

French ace Charles Nungesser, with Spa 65, destroys four German observation balloons, two in the morning and two in the afternoon, for victories 39, 40, 41 and 42.

French ace Armand Pinsard, with Spa 23, destroys a German observation balloon for victory number 25. He is accompanied by a Lt Simeoni, victory number 1.
