Icon9 Hey all (Operation Trident aka Nsomnia) I've been Away...

Hello Neil & co!

I had a stroke after I got back from vacation in the last day of November 2016 and hav'nt gone on the computer, for more than a half hour every couple/few weeks, until today to let everoyne know whats happening.

All my income from my websites/tutorials/assets/tutoring & live help/advertising went down the tubes etc. and I cant work anymore at the moment (a person on one of my games Facebook pages (I got to tell them first a week or so ago and I were talking and his uncle had a stroke and took him 8 years to get back to normal. I dont know details though)

Canada does not pay for anything except core care (doctors and hospitals) you pay for rehab, drugs, medical devices etc. so I could only afford a little rehab after waiting over a month in hospital with nothing to do but sit and hurt and wonder what happened since they are so busy I was able to get to the rehab hospital, but could not afford its help anymore and DEFINITLY not the outpatient, I got quoted for memory group there (private place) and its.. well sickening and makes me glad Canada did pay the $100,000 - $200,000 for the brain surgery by the specialist and all the care and sedation etc. (and my arm almost got amputated too from pooled blood so htat needed surgery too).

So I have no issues anyone can tell by looking from the outside (unless they are waving from my blind side) which is because I fell down the stairs (Tripped rather. it happens a lot actually at my place (it used to anyway I've idiot proofed the house now) kids toys, cat **** etc.) but I fell HARD and I guess I got a bad concussion, as the first injury, and was acting weird but my girl just went back to bed and I went on the computer where I was acting like I was drunk as a skunk and high as the sky I guess and my brain developed a bleed from the fall which eventually made it worse and worse.

After it got bad enough and I tried to get up for whatever reason off the computer chair (it didnt effect my left or right side like a lot of people) and in doing so, I fell again somewhere between the computer and bedroom and ended up near the bottom of the stairs halfway between the two rooms; laying down flat.

My girlfriend got up and thought I had drunken myself to sleep (I used to drink a lot when we were first together 12 years ago) and left me after putting me in the recovery position (so you don't suffocate on your own vomit) for work and called my grandmother in town to look after me.
She came over and knew it WAS NOT right and called 911 (thats a 400 dollar charge too even in Canada) and they rushed me to the hospital and did brain surgery to releive the pressure from the continued bleeding.
Just my luck I stayed at my grandparents who are getting very old after that cause their place was close to the hospital and after that rehab but now they fast track stroke patients because so many young people are having them.

My brain shifted about 1/2 inch and in-doing-so: cut off an artery causing the "stroke" (a blockage in the blood supply to the brain causing cell death) in my visual cortex (this might be near a major memory area too I'm not sure, anyone know the brain well?) and made me fall one last time too they think, just for me to make sure I had rocked myself so hard my bushings and bearings were falling out.
I burnt down our kitchen counter with a toaster oven making food late that night at the same time for whatever reason (pizza pops it looked like) and I guess it was just mayhem when my girl actually woke up for work (our bedroom is in the basement with extra thick and sound cancelling foam since we work different shifts always until we decide to have a kid when I can take over)

So my whole business is done as far as I'm concerned (making about 40 bucks a month, not able to do more stuff at that "wage") and I deleted all my files in a haze first time trying my computer. Mostly not doing anything and not really able to with the computer, rehab or anything. Cant drive ever again.

The things that can change your life....

If people want the rights to my game I started (the cold war sub game) let me know. If anyone has the project files please contact me! (From perforce or server etc.)

Any questions?

Neil, if you need a coder/modeler/animator/texture artist/cut scene videos/etc. etc. etc. I'm well versed in a few things haha ?

I did speak to my doctor today and he might want to try a drug temporarily but it doesn't get to the root of the problem.

Cripes mate what a nasty set of events you've been through, you might make some money writing a book on your life!!
I hope your situation improves, I don't see how it could get any worse.
All the best mate and I will be praying for you.

Cheers,
Reece.

Sitting here feeling stunned... I am so very sorry to read this. I had no idea you had to pay for all the rehab etc yourself in Canada, let alone even the 911 call! That all seems so harsh

Hello insomnia,
so sorry to hear that. What a succession of bad events! Chances are so much better when a stroke is discovered sooner. Reading that i do not know what to say. I had no idea that health care is like that, in Canada. Is there no insurance or coverage for medical treatment in case of such emergencies? (and yes i would prefer a "nanny" state everytime before this, 'sorry' for the 'political' sidekick. NOT.)

Glad that the surgery could be done though. It is idiotic to say but it seems you were lucky. An elder aunt of mine lay in her chamber for 24 hours until someone realized something was wrong, and broke into her apartment. She was in a coma, palsied completely on one side. It was all too late, brain had been cut off fro a long time. She had to move into a nursing home and was never able to regain strength or even leave the bed again until she died two years later. Finding her within an hour would most probably have prevented all this.

This is really hard.. i have no idea how old you are; when you are younger you have of course much better chances for a recovery. I am not a doctor but i read a bit after this happened. The damaged area with its tissue cut off from supply cannot be "repaired", but will be reduced and built back over time, with other neurons building new axons to make up for the loss, and take over cut connections. This will take time though, speaking of years.

I don't know whether this is a good explanation..
"Normally, there is a perfect balance between the two halves of the brain thanks to the nerve cord known as corpus callosum, which allows for precise coordination between their two functions"
"The damage caused by a stroke changes this balance, with the consequence that the healthy hemisphere takes over the command and limits the plastic potential of the damaged tissue."

'Plastic' in this respect means that the brain is changing and exchanging grey matter and neuron connections all the time, and more and quickly after such events as a stroke: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroplasticity

I hope you get over it and better, soon.

It's a wonder you've made it this far ... you make me love the USA health care system even more ... even the American VA is better than that.

I get the impression that they just want you to crawl over into a corner and die.

Thank you for sharing your trials and tribulations with us. Hang in there and keep in touch.

I know it sounds funny from a bunch of strangers, but we love you

Very sorry to learn of your personal health experience but elated you have recovered sufficiently to be able to return here.

Welcome back matey and seriously best wishes for further improvements as time progresses.

I'm really sorry to hear of your difficulties. Have your physicians given you a long term prognosis with regards to a recovery plan ? Is stem cell introduction into the damaged area of the brain a possibility ? Is there any sort of therapy plan being considered ?

It was initially thought the brain had little chance to recover after a CVA or stroke. It has been found that the brain actually can " rewire " itself after a stroke or brain injury. essentially, brain functions migrate from a damaged area to an area of the brain that is not damaged. I believe there are therapeutic strategies and medications that can assist in recovery as well. The results can vary due to extraneous factors such as general health, extent of injury, access to health care, etc....

I think they have had promising results with serotonin based medications. Serotonin is a bio chemical Neuro-Transmitter and Serotonin re-uptake inhibitors causes elevated levels of Serotonin in the brain, which can help transmissions of impulses. This class of medications are more commonly used for those individuals suffering from depression or bi-polar disorders. My understanding is these drugs have been very helpful in recovery plans.

Talk with your physician about these therapies and others.

I hope things get better for you and i will keep you in my prayers.
Keep us updated on your recovery and how things are going. Feel free to contact me and I will do whatever research I can or contact people I know for answers.

We are all wishing you the best.

Best regards.

Wow, man, you have been through the wringer. So this all started by a fall down the stairs, which resulted in a concussion? The crazy thing about events like this, it was not in your "plan". I know how that feels, everything in your life gets turned upside down. Ta da, now you have a new life, and not one you were planning for. I will tell you I am glad you are still with us, that's something.

Man, I'm really sorry to hear this. I've had enough medical complications in my own life to understand a little of what you're going through. Nothing that serious, though.

All I can do is hope things work out for the best and you get the care you need.

Ahoy @nsomnia
I think the most important thing is that you are aware of yourself.
Everything else is so unimportant.

I wish good recovery.

Yeah some of Canada sucks for health care f you don't have a few years savings but who prepares for heart attacks and burst veins and such.

I appreciate that link when j have another good day and can handle reading which is getting so much easier I'll check that out. There is the rare case like recently I saw on the news blind stroke victims in both sides can sometimes regain some vision after many years. My father is blind in his other eye so we are the pirates now.

Two years ago out if coma I thought I was 16 and my tattoos were because I was a dangerous biker. At least the nurses told me j said that constantey haha. Good thing I don't remember.

Thank god we were back from our vacation Right before it happened.

I won't allow kids to slide their bums down the stairs after too much sugar anymore.

Thanks for the support all I just remembered subsim for the first time. I have slowly been investing in some higher than usual risk items as well as gids to make a little money for the family and a tiny bit of gaugenteed income.

Were trying some new medications through the rest of summer so I can try to hibernate during winter (more global warming please!) and re-learn and increase my knowledge in coding, modelling and game design. I was going to go to a new collage that was just finished building two months after my accident that was a game design college 100% at the moment with enough cofffee I can watch youtube and netflix for a bit and do a few checks on the computer.
