Default Short Description & What it does for you:

Finally I have resumed code for S3F (it took me quite a while to organize all this) and I decided to delay its next version for testing this newly rewritten module: the SFSF. I have recently come to the conclusion that a great many fellows still have problems with Steam and/or Starforce and even with thorough documentation it appears too much of a hassle to get things right.

The result of this thought made me spend this weekend on some code and so I hand out to you an unreleased module of S3F, so you can test it to your liking and provide me with your constructice input as to what might be a useful addition.

Now this is what SFSF is all about - and yes, it is going to be integrated in the next S3F version:

Highlights & Key-Features at a Glance:
█ = COMPLETED

= IN THE WORKS, WITH RESULTS ALREADY VISIBLE
█ = NOT BEGUN WITH SO FAR

  • SFSF synchronizes with our |DEF|-server and tells you if there is another updated version available.
  • SFSF lets you apply the AUTOMATED STEAM-FiX:
    • the patched result is compatible with S3F, S3H and S3S.
    • players can now "mod & patch" their STEAM-SH3 to their liking and it will work.
    • moves the selected SH3-installation where you choose, BUT out of
      1. Programs (X86)
      2. Steam's directories
  • SFSF lets you apply the AUTOMATED STARFORCE-FiX:
    • players can now install their old DVD under Win7-10.
    • players can now play SH3 without the DVD in the drive.
    • the patched result is compatible with S3F, S3H and S3S.
    • all SF-driver-files are removed from your system.
    • all SF-registry-entries are removed from your system.
  • SFSF creates a short report for debugging and puts it on our |DEF|-report-server.
  • SFSF displays the user if i am online, so we can have a chat and I can give you live assistance on TS3.
  • SFSF allows you to connect to SUBSiM's TEAMSPEAK3-Server, where you can discuss the results with me or others.

Default = SHORT INSTRUCTIONS =

SFSF is actually very intuitive and easy to handle:
  • Simply download it, unpack whereever you like and allow it through your security software (Defender? Avast? AVG? Firewall?)
  • You need an own legal copy of Ubisoft's SH3.
  • This module is MOD-INDEPENT, you use it BEFORE you choose any mods (I thought that would be self-evident).
After running SFSF as administrator
  • you point the tool to your installation-path, simply click on the default-path and you can browse your harddrive.
  • The destination-path is only needed for the STEAM-FiX, since it moves your STEAM-SH3-installation "out of Steam's access" and out of the UAC-controlled directories that many players apparently cannot stop installing to.
Then select which FiX you wish to apply:
  • Both FiXES perform checks before the actual patch-work:
    • is the installation-path valid?
    • is the destination-path valid (only for STEAM-Fix)?
    • are both directories NOT the same (only for STEAM-Fix)?
  • Both FiXES give you a final warning and you can abort the action.
Then SFSF ends by submitting the debug-report-file and wishes you a nice day

NOTE: The GFX used are clickable (self-explanatory).

Default = SHORT INSTRUCTIONS = STEAM-FiX

IF YOU WANT TO APPLY THE STEAM-FiX
Make sure that
  • you provide a valid installation-path
→ That is the path of the installation you want to fix
(SFSF tries to find what you have by attempting to read the Windows-Registry)
  • you provide a valid destination-path
→ That is where the "STEAM-SH3-installation" is going to be moved to (= out of STEAM's reach)
→ Do NOT specifiy "just another thread which is controlled by Win's UAC"
Verify once more...and GO!

IMPORTANT: It is common knowledge of 11 years experience of SH3, that you NOT install or move SH3 to...
  • locations that Windows UAC (Vista and newer) such as c:\Programs or any location in "x86"
  • the very same location where it already is
  • anywhere else in Steam's reach.
I trust that you switch on your brain here. The tool will NOT work elsewise... and also JScones docuimented this already ages ago in S3C, look here and keep this rule:

Default Background of the StarForce-issue - written by good old LaufenzumZiel

The good news: The drivers won't install as long as you don't start the game.

To get you aboard you'll have to install the game NOT into the default path but something like C:\games\... - or whatever UAC unprotected path you think fits.

Don't start the game, don't install any 3rd party software provided with your DVD.

Check the installation directory for the Sh3.exe and rightclick it. Select Properties and the tab "Details" to read the version number of your Sh3.exe.

If it is 1.0.0.0 you have the original, unpatched, starforced version. Starting the game will install the incompatible StarForce drivers and you've messed it up.

If it reads 1.4.0.1 you have a patched and (pretty sure) StarForce-free installation. To check that, remove the DVD and try to start the game. If it works, you are good to go - otherwise PATCH USING SFSF

With 1.0.0.0 you'll have to patch to 1.4b and PATCH USING SFSF to get rid of the game checking for StarForce and the DVD. It doesn't have any consequences with other starforced software, as long as you didn't install the old drivers and have to remove the StarForce crap with the SF tool. Only this will interfere with any other StarForce protected game installations.
So far, so good. Couple of downloads already, but so far no bugs reported.

A little upgrade with two additional functions, all updated here in this very thread as usual.

Default Valid installation directory

Hi, when I want to run the steam fix, the tool detects automatically the directory where my SH3 is installed: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Silent Hunter 3". Then, I select the target directory where I want to "copy" my current SH3 installation, click on "steam fix", and the tool enters in a loop asking me all the time for a "valid installation directory".

Am i doing something wrong?

Thanks!

Fixed now, I hope.

I forgot 1 SPACE-character in the default string memory. See the difference?
C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Silent Hunter 3\
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Silent Hunter 3\

This results in the error of "invalid directory", when the user does simply continue without reselecting.

Recompiled and uploaded. Try again! Should work now.

IF C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Silent Hunter 3\ exists
Does it exist?

Still doesn't work... sorry.

These are my steps:

1 - Open SFSF as "run as administrattor"
2 - Select source directory every time, discarding the default value proposed by the tool.
3 - Select the destination directory
4 - Click "steam fix" button
5 - And at this point, the tool shows me the browse dialog to select an installation folder over and over.

Thanks for your assistance.
