"Excuse please, honorable instructor, how will we know when to turn on the sonar?"

"Please pay attention IJN Cadets. When you approach the enemy submarine from its broadside, your sonar will detect it."

"Excuse please honorable instructor, how do we know that the enemy sub has oriented its broadside to us?"

"You are not listening, cadets. I repeat--When you approach the enemy submarine from its broadside, your sonar will detect it."

"So sorry, sir, please explain, how will we even know that a sub is in the area?"

"Please listen and this time hear my instruction, cadets. When you approach the enemy submarine from its broadside, your sonar will detect it."
