Showoff Little pit stop to USS Alabama and SS Drum

I've always stopped by the USS Alabama and SS Drum in Mobile, Alabama when driving past, and last week was the first time since our little guy was born. We had a great time, mid-70s for a temperature with a nice breeze, cloud cover as not to bake in the sun, and of course a WW2 era battleship and submarine.

I think he liked it as much as I enjoyed sharing it with him

After seeing the submarine little man was hungry and needed a drink. We went to the galley but there weren't any toddler friendly options for food, but I saw a hot dog roller against the back wall. I asked if she could microwave a hot dog for us and not only did she agree, but did it on a grill outside and didn't charge us for it! That was very generous and I don't remember your name but thank you, he ate the whole thing!

One of the curators complimented on little man's demeanor and how fortunate he got his Mama's looks We really had a great time and can't wait to go back again.

-----Here's a pic of Dada from 9 years ago at the submarine!

How cool is this ?

I think the little guy needs his own Subsim account. It's great that you shared one of your interests with the " little guy. " I'm glad you both had a great day exploring the sub and surrounding museum. I'm sure this is one of many great days ahead for you both exploring other interests.

One question Chad. Do they have tours available to see the interior of the Sub and other warships ?

Thanks for sharing your story and pictures Chad.

Commander Wallace they have self-guided tours. There is a nice 5-page manifest they give you to describe the different histories of the boats and numbers with descriptions of the station you are visiting. But you can spend as much time as you want on each boat.

Wait. Who are you again?

Just kidding of course. It's been almost a decade since our little get-together, and a lot has changed. I'm glad you're turning your next generation on to the things you enjoy.

Thanks for the information Chad. I saw later that there was an entry gantry into the stern of the submarine. I have visited a few WW2 vintage submarines in the U.S and most tours are very guided and choreographed with regards to how much time you can spend at any one compartment or station.

After seeing your pictures and narrative, I very much want to see the USS Alabama and SS Drum. I'm still very much jealous of a few of our Subsim members like Catfish for one, who had a nice Subsim meet and who visited U-995 in Laboe. I'm also very happy for the same Subsim members who got to meet in Laboe, hang out together and talk and view the Type VIIC/41 U-boat.

The U.S has a rich history of it's own with regards to WW2 aircraft and Navy vessels that are still in flying and or sea worthy as you showed us with your pictures. Subsim member Dave Kay posted a thread on the USS Ling SS-297 and efforts to save her.
