Cruise ship collisions are rare - even more so between two vessels from the same company. Firm Holland America suffered this unfortunate scenario when ship Oosterdam struck fellow Holland America carrier, Nieuw Amsterdam, in port in Canada. Those travelling on board both ships in the Vancouver port took to social media to document the drama, with some reporting “crunching sounds” and others heading onto deck to witness the incident.

I knew nothing about this but upon reading your post I called James who just happened to be downstairs in the conservatory eating with his sister and her husband up to the mancave (he came home yesterday) to watch the video clip and he informed me his ship (Eurodam) was in the exact same berth in Vancouver just 24 hours earlier.

EDIT: I forgot to mention he is attending a two day job interview tomorrow to ascertain his suitability for a Port of Tees Pilot position.

Well, having come home just Sunday gone he received a phone call early yesterday morning informing him the Staff Captain on Eurodam has had to leave the ship for urgent personal reasons.

James is now on a flight back to Seattle to provide cover for twelve days.

Boy returns home on Monday and is off on a three week well-earned vacation to Indonesia 17th June.

More importantly though, he has been informed he was successful in his recent applicastion and interview for a Pilots job at the Port of Tees.

The port run a managed retirement system and have informed him that he will commence work at any time between now and three years hence so now it is a waiting game but at least he has something to look forward to and at a greatly enhanced salary level than that which he currently enjoys.

Yeah, I initially thought that as well but the job is so specialised and obviously warrants a Master Mariner qualification accompanied with a great deal of local navigational training this means they are few and far between.

Add to that the remuneration package and the fact these positions are highly sought after, a job for life you might say, the port know well in advance when retirements are due and advertise accordingly.

I reckon the boy can struggle along on his current financial package until he gets his turn

Plus your son will have to come home for the Declaration Ceremony and enjoy his glass of something fizzy.

The final stage is the declaration ceremony. This ceremony is a formal affair held onboard the Wellington in which you make your declaration to the Honourable Company and your fellow Master Mariners. You are then welcomed into the Honourable Company with an address from one of our senior officers and a glass of something fizzy.
