wolf_howl15 Orange mission star doesn't turn grey...

I am on the 3rd mission of a career path, starting in March 1943 at Pearl Harbor, and have encountered a problem:

1) My first mission was to patrol the Marianas and take out enemy shipping. On reaching the orange star, near the Marianas, nothing happened: the star stayed orange and there was no confirmation that I had reached the area!

I managed to sink several ships and got back to Pearl safely, thus being awarded a medal and kudos, yet was given an "incomplete" for not getting to the Marianas.

2) Second mission to Palau: the orange star turned grey and I received a message saying "carry on": both phases of the mission were completed.

3) I have just reached the orange star in the Carolinas, after being instructed to patrol the area and destroy enemy shipping. On the way I encountered a small convoy, sunk a destroyer and large old passenger liner, got away from the other two escorting destroyers with no damage and reached the star: it hasn't turned grey and that part of the mission will now be recorded as incomplete.

So, what gives? Is it a mistake to sink ships on the way to the patrol area, or there something else going wrong? Two out of three missions have been rendered incomplete, and I'm in the dark as to how to make that orange star go grey.

Any advice gratefully accepted.

Are you playing with any mods? If so, which ones, and in which order are they loaded? Where do you have Silent Hunter 4 installed? Is it a disk version or a download - and if a download, where did you get it? Does the game have Uboats in it?

As to the basics of some of the missions, generally speaking, with the 'basic' missions, you can have a "Patrol" assignment, which is time-based, or a "Sink" mission, which is tonnage based. Pay attention to how you're given the instructions. In Stock, most of the Patrol missions are like "Patrol in Area Z for five days. Sink all enemy vessels encountered." or whatever. Sometimes, the size of the patrol area may be given. Keep that in your mind, and draw a circle around the patrol start using the compass tool on the Nav Map, and then stay within the confines of that circle for the given amount of time. Unfortunately, they don't always give you the size of the area. Usually speaking though, it'll be 100 nautical miles, so I'll usually draw a 50 nautical mile circle... juss sayin'... I have trouble coloring inside the lines sometimes, so I have a "safety margin", so to speak...

You could also read through THEBERBSTER's thread SH4 <> TUTORIALS <> HOW TO DO IT <> INFO, which is a stickie thread near the top of this section of the board. I know there are several threads around SubSim here for completing missions, but for the life of me, I cannot find a thing... so over on the old Ubisoft forum is Guide to Completing Missions in SH4, which is rather dated, but oh well - it'll get you going...

Edit: I did find this download:

Thanks for the links propbeanie: from the Guide to Completing Missions, I had to patrol within 100 NM of the objective star for 48 hours, before that part was completed. Honour has now been restored and my career is still on track.

exactly, note also that this is cumulative so you can leave the area and come back, star will turn grey after the 48 hours has been done.
