when contacts appear on radar screen, how do you know if it's sj radar or not? dont want to get bombed by a plane while thinking blip is a ship.

WWII ships ran at speeds between 5 and 35 knots, airplanes flew at 100 to 300 knots. Going really really fast compared to a ship = dadblasted newfangled flying machine contraption. If you have map contacts on, the radar target will show up on that with a speed that says "very fast", only airplanes say that.

Another way to tell. Go to your radar screen. If it shows up, it's a ship. If it doesn't show up, it's an airplane.

This. The radar screens in SH4 are for the SJ radar only. Which SH1 had a better representation of sadly.

So true. I've tried to mod my game to be more like SH1. Right now I'm tearing my hair out on the radar - without much luck.
Happy Hunting!

On your Nav map you'll see little squares where the plane is and it says, "Very Fast". Those are planes and is the only way you can see how close they are. That is the only way SD radar shows what it knows. I begged the Devs to play SH1 so they could get a taste of US subs in the Pacific, but they probably didn't read my comment - besides, most people are used to playing the U-boat side... there are a few of us who don't - ha! So, SH4 is what it is, radar et all. You get used to it. Happy Hunting!

SH4 is really nothing more than SH3 part 2: the American U-boats edition. Most if not all the file structure from SH3 is still present in game. Once you start digging into the modding of it you really start to see it more. Take for example the differences in the propulsion setup between a fleet boat and a uboat. Uboats had 2 diesels and 2 motors on a direct dive system, meaning you had to clutch in the motors to charge batteries or for underwater propulsion. Fleet boats have a 4 diesel and 4 motor setup. The diesel ran generators only while the actual propulsion was provided solely by the 4 high speed motors. Regardless of what boat you have in game, you only have 2 diesels and 2 motors.
