SHO Hydrophones detecting enemies before radar does

I have been using one of the single missions to test various mods combinations; i don't think it is a stock mission but one that came with RSRD, USS Flying Fish in 1942 where you are facing an IJN task force who just bombarded Henderson field.

Anyway I have played this mission a dozen times and usually the enemy task force gets detected by the radar first.

But with this new mod soup I am using now and that includes the OTC mod that I didn't use before, for some reason it is the hydrophone that detects the enemy task force at roughly a 10-11 nm range.

I made sure the radar is switched on, set for max range and on continuous sweeps and enemy blips do appear on the radar screen when I go to the station, but it is the hydro that detects the enemy ships first.

Is this normal?

You could try backing the ISP off, and see if there is a difference, but we encounter the same thing in FotRSU. Not an "all the time" kind of thing, but the sonar, especially in the open water areas, will pick-up sometimes way before the radar, given the right circumstances, such as a submerged sub doing Ahead 1/3 (or slower).

Okay thanks for the reply, I am going to remove ISP. I am not sure it affects sensor range but I have had four japanese ships I was tracking on sonar sink in heavy seas and I have a hunch this mod might have caused this incident.

I would think that would not be uncommon due to sound travelling faster through water and not being subject to the curvature of the earth like radar. Sound can travel very far in the ocean.

i made a mission to test the range of the hydrophones, shortly after sh4 was released, becus knowing its range is kind of important, and i found the range to be 18.3nm.
that is a constant, its always 18.3nm. even with the latest radars in late war, your longest sensor range will be with the hydrophones.
in real life, the hydrophone listening range would vary from day to day, in the book "clear the bridge" by richard okane, one day, the sound man picked up the sound of distant depth charging in the yellow sea,
after awhile, he determined that the depth charging was 58 miles away, that could only have been found by triangulation.
i'm not aware of any mod that tweeked the hydrophone range, i run with trigger maru, like stock sh4, in trigger, its 18.3nm.

That's a good idea to do for a mod, greyrider.

I'll do me some tests in the FotRSU mod and come back later and see what I find. What did you do, plant some anchored ships about your sub in the ME, at an approximate compass setting so that you'd know which ship was which, if you saw it on sonar? Did it seem to matter which ships you used?

Regarding radar range. I have always assumed that the range is relatively small in the first sets, but increases as radar improves. would I be right?

Absolutely right. I do not know if this is simulated in "Vanilla".
Speaking of radar, did you know that your microwave oven is actually a radar.

anyone who has watched tv like The Blue Planet will know sonar can carry for miles underwater. Dolphins, whales etc can hear 'conversations' hundreds of miles away. Water is the best conductor of sound - ever! Radar is limited by the horizon, at what? 12000 - 14000 yards away. If radar is mounted on the deck, thats the limit but if higher, on the tower mast, you may get another 2000 yards. A good trained asdic operator will pick out the turning of screws at a reasonably great distance. Depth, salinity and temperature were of vital importance in the effectiveness of the British ASDIC, first researched in WW1 by French, British and US scientists. It later became known by the USA word, Sonar. The worlds first vessel to receive ASDIC was HMS P59 in 1919.
