Default Campaign Mission Generation

So, in doing the 1984 Campaign, I'm tasked with launching 8 TLAM'S at 2 munition storage depots in Archangelesk. Long trip there with no hassles but once I get to within the 100 mile radius I meet a surface task force along with a submarine escort.

A big battle ensues and I end up taking out all the ships and launching the TLAM's at the targets. The problem was I got hit by a single torpedo and multiple depth charges during the encounter. I managed to contain the flooding and got all repairs done but I had 2 percent hull integrity.

I left the mission and got the job well done screen but immediately was tasked with another mission that would be virtually impossible to complete without harbour repairs.

I had to ignore the mission and go back to harbour to repair and rearm. Half way back I got the bad boy mission not completed message.

Just wondered if it's a bug in the mission generator or whether they expect you to battle with that kind of hull damage.

That should be added to the coding. I think the lack of ammunition prompts a recall to port, but hull damage is another burp in the system...I think.

No, no, no... This has been in the forums a lot of times:
You are NOT in the TLAM mission, you are in a mission to go against ASWs which are not your mission objective.
Don't fire TLAMs, quit the mission and go nearer to the launch site...A new mission screen will open and say 'you are within firing range'. That's the moment to fire your missiles

I have not received that message...on any campaign dealing with a TLAM mission at Archangalesk. But, once my hull damage is down to a certain level, whatever that is deemed to be, a message should be received to return to port. Then again, it should only occur between missions, not during a mission.

I think in a situation like that you should be able to send a sitrep requesting repairs or to re arm. Something like a trailing wire or SATCOM depending on the era you are playing, it would make the game more immersive and perhaps introduce the possibility of sending after action reports or even ECR's(Enemy Contact Reports).

Using a Virginia Class, I just assume that I send a After Action Report after each mission. Sometimes, higher brings me back for ammo, but I don't think hull damage is noticed.

Maybe I am mistaken. Just a question.

Something is definitely amiss. According to patch notes of 1.07,
Quote:
Return to base mission now given if < 8-12 total weapons or hull < 50%
2% is obviously lower than 50%.

As a side note these criteria should be user configurable... With 12 VLS tubes one can empty all torpedo loads and not get an RTB mission.

Yes, you did not receive this message because sort of a bug:

If you meet an ASW group in the launch area, then:

a)
You deal with it and then launch missiles, this will not count, even if they hit; why? This counted only as ASW encounter and for the game you 'still' have to carry out your main mission. Technically, you succeed if you launch your missiles before dealing with the ASW group, alas the game doesn't count that (BUG), else you fail your main mission because of the 'trouble' you made in the zone, see b).

b)
You deal with it and quit the mission without launching missiles (which was not your objective), you have made so much 'trouble' in the launch area that the enemy is on red alert , and you have therefore FAILED your TLAM mission . You failed because you must destroy units on the ground, and not simply destroy some baracks or the airport. Alerted by your 'troublemaking' in the zone, the planes have taken off and will land somewhere else if you destroy the airport, so there is pretty no military value if you strike. Thus: you have failed. Better keep your missiles. Good game

Problem is the game cannot pop-up 2 mission screens at the same time, one telling you you have failed the mission and one giving you new orders (to return home or another mission). So basically you are stucked with no new mission, you must waste time until you get new mission. Bad game Hey Killerfish, rant, rant....

The devs are aware of this, but say it's complicated to merge mission objectives with different encounters.
Same can happen with SEAL drop missions, you must stay stealthy and not make trouble in the drop zone, or you fail.

Xeno I fired the TLAMS and completed the land strike mission. I got the job well done screen. It's just that immediately after that, I got another mission with 2 percent hull integrity.

I fired the TLAMS in 2 salvos of 4. Immediately after firing the second salvo, even before the missiles reached land, I was awarded the completion of the mission. I know this because when I hit esc, the fire 8 TLAM part of the briefing was green where it was red before. Also I watched the missiles hone in and destroy targets.

Sorry, Frog, somehow I missed reading that you received the 'mission accomplished' screen. I've read again your 1st post.

Patch notes say 50% hull damage for order to go home, but it never worked AFAIK, only when you have low torpedo nr. left and I don't know how low. And I don't yet know for 1.09. Just assume that it's the sub commander who decides to go home because of damage.
In your case with 2% hull, you want to be ordered to go home, so you could fire all your torpedos but keep 3-4 before quitting mission, that's weird but it will do the trick I think. I would however not bother and just head home avoiding contacts , caus I don't want to be a sitting duck and unarmed.

For missions, that's rigid: if timeline is over they are failed if target is not destroyed, doesn't matter if you dock or not at port or whatever else, EXCEPT as I say above the TLAM and SEAL missions which are very special.

If you have taken damage or are low on weapons, when assigned a new mission it should be a return to base.

In the OP's case, it sounds like this was an ASW patrol encounter which would not have ended the current mission when completed and thus didn't give the expected return to base. So this might be an oversight where we may have to consider all engagements as a possible "end of current mission", if the player sub needs to return to base.

...or we leave it up to the player to do whatever they can to achieve their mission goals. Keep in mind that the OP may have had to return to base and fail the mission, but the tonnage they earned in that fight would offset this instead.
