radar Hey guys new to subsim here. Contemplating getting into sh3

Hey guys, new subsimmer here, and new to the franchise in general. I used to watch a lot of silent hunter videos and enjoyed them and I decided to dive on into this world on naval warfare. Been reading subsim forums for a while so i decided to make the account for a change. So what is it that I am asking?

So i went ahead and bought Uboat and i enjoyed it and actively follow it but it needs at least a year and a half to be a full fledged game. But Uboat left that itch in me so i did my research. I tried sh4 but pacific boats aint my thing. Now i do own sh5 and just bought sh3 but between twos and gwx i dont know what to choose. I am a student pilot in real life so the option to try both at its modded state is not an option, so i continued to do research. now most people in the forums swear by sh3 gwx and most of the videos i see, has gwx looking far more superior. i even tried looking online for sh3 vs sh4,sh5,uboat etc but either couldn't find proper results or current results as such because it is a niche game. As such i dont know which one is better, twos or gwx. I know is very arbitrary but Im just trying to make a choice here as time is a factor for me.

In conclusion im thinking of getting into sh3 gwx and the modding scene but im not super sure yet. Is there a good set of modlist compatible with gwx that anyone can recomend and also what is sh3 commander? if anyone knows any youtube videos for sh3 mod installation that will be great. Im going to use some of the stickys here in the forum to figure out the modding scene.

As a conclusion to my research can anyone also recommend if they prefer twos or gwx and why? hopefully this thread can gain some momentum and there will be a more updated result for sh3 gwx vs.... I also dont mind the nostalgic reviews as long as they give their heartfelt opinions. thanks guys.

also ive been watching this and i find this hilarious

Welcome Aboard!

The real difference between all these sims has nothing to do with which is "best" or even "better"; the difference is between what you want from a sim like this.

With SH3 you have to live with graphics that are more than a decade old, and even then people complained that they looked dated. It does have its share of bugs so a minimal level of modding is required, but that seems to be true of any game these days. What elevates SH3 to that level beyond is that the same decade has brought several different available mod compilations - "supermods" - that each are oriented toward providing something different from the others.

There's NYGM, which is made to improve the realism in the game play. It gives you enemy escorts and planes that are much more dangerous - sometimes frighteningly so. It's for the player who wants to experience the terror that comes with being under attack as well as the triumph of actually winning those battles.

Then you have something like WAC, which is dedicated to recreating the full campaigns and making you part of the real war.

Something like LSH3 is devoted to the visceral side of the game, using amazing graphics improvements to make you feel like you're really there.

GWX is the most popular, and I think that's because it does the best job of combining all the above features. I have felt the extreme emotions that come with attacking and being attacked, and I have felt the placid joy of looking at the sights while just sailing out of a harbor at a stately 5 knots (in real life they do have speed limits).

SH3 is also the only version that works with SH3 Commander, a program specifically designed for that sim, which lets you change many parameters of the game (gun reload rates, wave heights, your u-boat number, starting bases, and others) as well as little things like randomizing the gramophone play order and much bigger ones like the Merchant Fleet Mod, which adds scores of new ships and giving them historical names, so you don't just sink a Liberty Ship, but you'll be told you sank SS Lucius Fairchild, or any one of almost 2,000 others. And that's just one class out of several hundred.

That is why SH3 is still the most popular of all the Silent Hunter series.

SH4 is not just for Pacific Boats. The second release included U-Boat Missions with the Monsun Boats in the orient. There is a fantastic megamod called Operation Monsun that basically turns SH4 into SH3 but with much better graphics. Unfortunately its closeness in time meant that OM never got the love from modders that SH3 did. The good news is that a decade later it is beginning to receive that attention, and some very talented people are working on as we type this.

SH5 got a bad reputation from the start because it wasn't SH3. It gives great and loving detail to all sub-variants of the Type VII boats, but no Type II or Type IX. It was also very buggy. While adding the other types of boats is an extremely task, the one big megamod, The Wolves Of Steel, takes the very best of the available smaller mods, plus a few of its own, and makes SH5 into a very playable, very enjoyable game which is easily the best-looking version of SH there is likely to be.

That's the short version.

I don't have the pc to run sh5, but regarding sh3 I'd advise just loading it and gwx, playing that and see what you think and go from there.
It's easy to start the modding madness, but it also leads many times to one spending more time modding the game (and fixing the game after such modding screwed it up) than actually playing it.
GWX is an easy install and will get you going. I prefer NYGM, but it's install is a bit more involved. Not hard to do in reality, but gwx is easier to install for someone new.
I'm a firm believer in the KISS principle.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I really appreciate it. Also thanks for the heartfelt welcome. I guess I will go with gwx for now and see where that takes me. Is there any other must have addons for gwx that I need?

hello gentleman. I have ran into another issue. I have sh3 plus gwx installed as the only mods. cannot for the life of me figure out how to increase the resolution to 1920x1080. Aparently through research there is the anarhebe gui mod but i tried it and it crashed my game and i had to start the install of the game from scratch again. Any suggestions fellow simmers? I am also not using any patch of any kind just gwx and sh3

Hi shadowfax and welcome
If you play only with GWX mod, all. Work good? No crash?
Maybe this can help:

Hey I tried the arv mod but it keeps crashing 70 percent t into loading the patrol. I am running steam and no patches. Otherwise the game works fine with just gwx only.

Now that's just wrong. Awful. Terrible.

Also very funny.

I would recommend GWX because it is basically an upgrade of the stock game and has many interesting features like historical naval events(Weserübung,Paukenschlag,etc..)and also many other things.

And always stay undetected!
