He certainly lived to a ripe old age, was it due to his life style?

IIRC he died over a week ago but better late than never I suppose.

An honourable veteran, few and far between.

Gute Winde und nachfolgende Meere.

Reinhard Hardegen was another U-Boat commander doing his job for which he had no real interest in. Reinhard Hardegen was also openly critical of the politics which sent him to sea in the first place.

Quote : Hardegen was not enamored with the Nazi regime; he openly disagreed with Nazi politics. He also, as U-Boat historian Michael Gannon documents meticulously with accounts from survivors, furnished food and navigational directions to the lifeboats of torpedoed merchantmen when possible and, in at least one case, forcibly halted a neutral ship to have it pick up survivors of a vessel he had sunk nearby.

A decent man caught up in the ugliness of war.

Fair winds and calm seas.

Default The drumbeater

Saw the obit in the Washington Post today.

On June 9th the Drumbeater passed away at 105 years old.

Smooth sailing on the eternal patrol.

It's really hard for me to understand, that by upcoming years we won't have any people who remember ww2 in the world. So sad to hear the last captain has died.

It is obviously inevitable, the last of those who served in WWI has already gone, a woman called Florence Green, a British citizen who served in the Allied armed forces, dying at the age of 110 years in February 2012.

Default Reinhard Hardegen, 105, who brought U-Boats to America's shore, died.

For historians of WWII in reference to Operation "Drumbeat".
Reinhard Hardegen died last week at 105 years old in Bremen Germany.
See the article in the NY Times from the following shortcut:
