Well, I've always considered Skybird the more educated and longer winded version of me. LOL

the problem also comes from the fact that "conservatism" varies from country to country.

Canadian conservatives tend to be conservative only on economic issues, i.e., more free markets, less regulations, lower taxes, but tend to be more liberal on social issues, i.e. in favour of same-sex marriage, abortion, no death penalty, which means that we would most likely be classified as "democrats" south of the border...

This brings up an interesting question. What is a conservative and what is a liberal?

I would be very interested in reading people's opinions about what these two terms mean. Let's not get insulting though. Talk about your own position not criticize others.

I am a moderate so I am not a good source of these definitions.

Default In Britain:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-30899534

... the political party of the social elite and the deferential others; it follows that if you vote for this party then you are yourself defined as a 'Conservative'

The Party is the one that most ordinary people associate with "The Establishment"

Entirely different to the US definition

My opinion...

Although it is not a hard and fast rule, I believe that Liberals generally emphasize the need for the government to solve problems. That basically means that they have less of an issue with government interference and regulations to level the playing field for all. They believe that the government should insure equality of outcome for all citizens.

Conservatives on the other hand seem to stress personal responsibility in citizens to make their own way. Conservatives believe that the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals and generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems. In other words, smaller, less intrusive governments.

The meanings have changed almost to the point of having switched. Classic liberalism espoused freedom of the individual and small government.
