Found A Photo of the USS Tawasa

My father used to collect photographs from World War II when he was younger. He never did tell me how many he had nor did he go into detail on them, but I found something very interesting today.

He had a safe that he kept all his mementos in. He fought against the Germans when they occupied Egypt, and he'd gotten most of his collection from there. Various items ranging from insignias, ammunition rounds, photographs, and even a helmet with a Walther P38. Unfortunately, I didn't learn of this until his death. Today, I finally managed to open the safe. I've sifted through the items, and I came across a photograph of the USS Tawasa (along with several others, but it's the Tawasa I'm interested in).

Can anyone tell me more about her?

EDIT:

It was actually photographed by Mr. "Skip" Tuttle and was sent to Mr. Arthur Fisher. Had a hard time reading the handwriting.

Interesting. How many photographs are in existence?

Interesting. The photo I've got is in black and white, and gets a very good shot of the ship from the left side. You can see the men on the deck fairly well (for an aerial photograph).

Here's a wikipedia entry. She had a long postwar career. Finally sold for scrapping in 1976.

Well, to the picture and from the article, dad got the photo from the Korean War, because it's got the serial TF-92 marked clearly on the bow. There's about a dozen people I can make out, including one fellow who appears to be the commander of the ship (dressed entirely in white and is standing atop the platform on the roof of the bridge). There's a man that seems to be inspecting the forward deck gun, and several others around him. All doors appear to be open, too.

Default Tawasa Photo

I sure would like to see that Tawasa photo. My father, Ed Leidholdt, who spent WWII in sub service, was its skipper during a portion of the Korean War.

I'm new to this forum, and if someone responds and I don't write back, I can be reached at leidhoas@jmu.edu

I'd appreciate any help you can provide me.

Best wishes,

Alex Leidholdt

Welcome aboard!

Stealth Hunter hasn't been around in almost a year, but there is always a chance that he'll pop in and see this.
