Default DW and Windows 8.1 ?

Hello, dear bubbleheads

Owning a computer under Windows 8.1, I felt sad when I learned that this game (which I planned to buy) doesn't work under Win8 and newer.

But a question crossed my mind: even if the developpers don't want to patch this game, maybe a kind modder did

Does an unofficial patch (or a trick maybe) exist so I can play Dangerous Waters on my computer ?

Thanks for your answers

Unfortunately, no one to my knowledge has found a solution for Windows 8 and it's not officially supported by Sonalysts according to their support site.

I suppose a downgrade to Windows 7 is not an option for you, but this is the route I've taken since I personally don't see any advantages to Windows 8.1 for desktop use. The only other option I might suggest would be to try running Dangerous Waters in a virtual environment such as VMware ThinApp, although I've not tried this myself and can't promise any success. For home use I own a MacBook Pro and run Dangerous Waters in OS X using Crossover, which works quite well since it simulates a Windows XP environment.

VMWare with Windows 7 works for me. Just use the search option for this forum and you will find more detailed threads about it.

Oh you'll get used to it in time.

SubSim tends to be a friendly forum and welcome greetings are commonplace.

Oh, btw...welcome

Same questions, same answers:
- have a dual boot (with win XP + whatever else)
- run on virtual environment
- buy an xp machine for 50$ to run it.

Well thanks for your charming welcome

And also thanks a lot for your answers!

I think I'll go with VMware, and if it doesn't work (everything I touch break ) I'll use the old dinosaur running on XP in my living room.

Also sorry if that question has been asked many times

I've done a bit of research since sooner or later we'll have to leave Windows XP (or 7) behind, and apparently there's a trick you can use to run Windows XP mode in Windows 8 without the need for an installation disk. Here's a link to the instructions.

http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-run...free-tutorial/

However, I couldn't get Dangerous Waters to run in the Hyper-V virtual Windows XP or Windows 7 systems. The Windows 7 VHD reported that the graphics failed to initialise so I suppose it must have something to do with the virtual driver. I even tried installing both Windows XP and 7 in a VMware virtual machine from OS X, then installing Dangerous Waters and testing its functionality, and finally converting these vmware.vmd disks to .vhd format in Windows 8.1 before attempting to run the program again in those Hyper-V environments. Without success.

There is a solution if you are willing to work with Linux. I'm royally pissed for over a year now because DW doesn't work with Win 8, since that left me without one of my 5 favorite games of all time. So I decided to give it a go on Linux, since I was thinking to experiment with Ubuntu anyway, and see if it's possible to ditch Windows altogether.

I installed Ubuntu 14:04 LTS to dual boot on my Windows 8.1 PC. In Ubuntu, I installed Wine (Windows emulator, you can find it easily and conveniently available in Ubuntu's built-in software center), and then installed DW through Wine. Before doing that I found an old thread here on Subsim forums about DW working in Wine, and the drawback that was emphasized in the post was that there is no sound when DW runs through Wine, and that you need to tamper with sound files in order to get them to work.

Still, I gave it a go, since the mentioned post is 4 years old and Wine has since been updated many times, and lo and behold - the sound files now work without any tampering or problems!

So, if you are screwed by Win 8 as I am, give Ubuntu/Wine combo a shot.

EDIT: I'm talking about DW vanilla with 1.04 patch, I didn't try any mods.

I managed to get it working on win 8.1

What did I do?:
- install virtualbox.
- install xp there.
- install guest tools stuff.
- install the steam/dangerous waters.
- set the 3d acceleration on.
- set the few colours mode on for the game. (this allows you to use a proper cursor)

This allows me to run the game, however the 3d models do not work properly (under water objects do not render properly, only sea surface is present, there is no main water body or sea bottom).

Good for you that it works. But running it in a Windows XP virtual machine does not mean that it works in Windows 8.1. The OS inside the virtual machine is a totally seperate system from the host OS. You made the game run in a simulated pc, that's all. It's still a feat if you get decent performance in it, but it does not solve the Windows 8 incompatibility.

Yes and I still get graphics and performance issues.

Graphics issues:
- in all modes/mods I get the strage morphings of under water objects and general water screw ups. Can be seen on this:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfile.../?id=300018025
screenshot.

Performance issues:
- even though I have a modern CPU (with frequency well above the required one) the game appears to run out of the CPU resources for some reason (XP says that 100 percent of the CPU resources are used and game has low FPS).
