Default AI Hydrophones

I have a question about the hydrophones on destroyers and corvettes. Does the AI hydrophone detect the noise from AI ships (convoys, other destroyers, etc.).

After my attack on a convoy, I try to hide/sneak away in the background noise of the convoy. Most times have been able to get away, but later on they seem to track me no matter what.

surface ship hydrophones only detect objects below the surface. ie your sub.

in real life this tactic might work to some degree, but for the most part, in game AND in real life... surface ship hydrophones lose their efficiency nearer to the surface as the intent of the design is to search for underwater objects and not surface objects.

so while you had the right idea... the DD never was detecting the surface ships at all... except visually... so your tactic of using their sound to help you evade the DDs was of no use im affraid.

i have a question about the sonar, does it have a minimum depth to detect? i believe they did historically?

sonar aboard the u-boat?

Near the sea surface there is quite a bit of clutter in the sound quality based on what i have read in books, here at subsim and other places.

any number i would throw out there would be a complete guess.

however, in the game i think the magic number is 8 meters depth or deeper.

Using a convoy to mask your sound was a historical tactic used by many including Otto Kretchmer. The sound of all that water churning made quite a ruckus to hydropone operators. and it was quite difficult to spot a subs noise in all that background noise.

In game I am doubtful if this works. It did in Aces of the Deep.

Also yes Sonar works worst near the surface and in choppy sea's they have a damned hard time finding you even feet away at periscope depth. near the surface water is always compacting and expanding as well as moving vertically (Waves) not the best way to send sound thru that mess and get a signal back. Also waves have highs and lows and once the sound hits a low it deflects down and gets broken up.

In game this works in stormy weather.

So if I get this right, at periscope depth you have a shot at masking your noise, but diving deep you would not.

in real life, under certain conditions... the boat would be slightly less detectable by hydrophones at periscope depth due to surface clutter.

this is not the case in SH3.

Also, at periscope depth (In stormy weather, or even in mildly choppy waves) you run the risk of broaching. Too many risks IMO; if you want to lose your attackers, then going as deep as you can and running at 1-2 knots is probably your best bet.

I was speaking of Asdic\sonar which sucks at the surface and in game in stormy sea's I have moved in and attacked and left all at Periscope depth and the destroyer's literally miss me feet away as they circle and ping.
