The interface I'm thinking of is replacing the Attack Data Tool (the upper right pull-out, on the periscope screen) with something like the German KiUB. I want all dials to be visible at one time. Range, Speed, Ship Height, Relative Bearing, AoB.....available with one look. Once set, you send the cumulative data to the TDC. Right now, you have to navigate through the Attack Data Tool to have the separate dials send their manual data along.
A full slide out TDC instead of the attack tool has always been my dream. I would turn the attack tool exclusively into a high res periscope range dial (Leave only that part) and have a full TDC that allows setting speed and AOb directly. The KiUB allows that, and it should be possible to do a similar thing for the US side.

Sadly it will be a ton of work. But worth it!

If that slide out TDC could be used from the radar station, that would be amazing, but I'm afraid you can only link it to the periscope station interface, not to the main bar.

I can make one if there is an interest. Personally I don't see the appeal of that tub

I am making a high definition S-Boat right now as well as several other projects (I work on them as the mood moves me). I can add it to the list if I can secure good reference images.
Where were you some years ago?

If you do a new hull it should suffice to merge it with the rest of the existing Narwhal. I'll arrange the permissions thing, as the subsim narwhal is already a bit dated and a new one would make it useless anyway

Hi Hitman, it's been a long time!! Hope you're doing well.

Guys, Hitman has forgotten more than I will ever know regarding the game. It's some of his work that prompted me to make the changes I did to the Radar in OTC. Modding takes an idea.....someone taking a few steps towards making the idea a reality.....then others coming along and making changes to it....all with the hope of making something better, more useful. My hat's off to you!!

Yes, what you've described is what I'm going to try. KiUB is a big influence for the project......with a different look.

Your right about the Radar screen compared to the Attack Periscope screen.....two different animals there. One 3D modeled, the other 2D with completely different components.....capabilities. Since no one has ventured into making game engine changes, were stuck with what's been given us.

Longknife, I'm interested in whatever you come up with!! I'm guessing les_green01 would too!

Well, if you're interested in farming out some of the messages stuff, I can try a few sections myself. Being a football fan (American, not that soccer crud) I can look for NFL and CFB scores from that period. Since auto racing was suspended for the duration, maybe I can look for horse racing too (it was off and on during the war). Maybe someone else could take baseball, other sports?

Any other ideas for messages?

I'm reading Clear the Bridge!: The War Patrols of the U.S.S. Tang now and O'Kane talks about some musician visiting Midway for a USO tour. Maybe something like that, or celebrity gossip?

For example:

1942 - Comedian Joe E. Brown entertains troop at bases in Alaska and the Aleutians.

1942 - Actress Carole Lombard, wife of actor Clark Gable, dies at the age of 33 in an aircraft crash on Mount Potosi, Nevada while returning from a War Bond tour.

1943 - Actress/Pinup Betty Grable marries trumpeter Harry James.

I'll start compiling a list with exact dates if it sounds like a good idea.

About the radio messages, maybe radio messages could be added concerning enemy attack/capture of ports/towns. It seems we get no inkling of when this happens, beyond the color changing on the map. In fact, any war news or reports would be good.

Hey guys, I have a small idea, I don't like the three battleship wrecks in Pearl, I think they should either be removed entirely or removed after a certain amount of time after Pearl Harbour, or redone.

Wow, they actually have a day-by-reports for the entire war!

For example, June 1942 http://www.ww2pacific.com/42june.html

Code:
JUNE 1942
June 1. Saratoga (CV-3) sorties San Diego for Pearl Harbor.
June 2. Yorktown (CV-5, TF 17, RAdm Fletcher) rendezvous Enterprise (CV-6 TF 16, RAdm Spruance) and Hornet (CV-8) 350 miles NE of Midway;
RAdm Fletcher is officer in tactical command; force consists of three carriers, seven heavy cruisers, one light cruiser, 16 destroyers.
U.S. deploys 25 fleet submarines west of Midway.
June 3. Japanese submarine cordon arrives Hawaii, but the two US task forces have already passed.
Japanese forces bearing down on Midway with five fleets and 200 ships: Strike Force is led by 4 carriers, 2 battleships, 3 cruisers, 11 destroyers.
Midway-based B-17's attack Japanese transports 600 miles west of Midway Island; inflict no damage. Four PBYs set out to attack the approaching Occupation Force.
Attempting to divert forces from Midway, a 2nd carrier force, Ryujo and Junyo, bomb Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
In an event whose importance only becomes clear later, a Mitsubishi A6M2 Type 0 carrier fighter, damaged over Dutch Harbor, makes an emergency landing on Akutan Island. The Zero flips over, killing the pilot
Task force of 5 cruisers and 4 destroyers leave Pearl for Alaska. diversion successful.

June 4. Battle of Midway
PBYs attack Occupation Force northwest of Midway; torpedoes fleet tanker Akebono Maru, little damage.
Japanese carrier fleet - Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu - sends its aircraft against defensive installations on Midway. Although defending USMC F2A's and F4F's suffer disastrous losses, damage to facilities on Midway is comparatively slight.
Japanese carrier fighters and antiaircraft fire annihilates the USMC SBD's and SB2U's and USAAF torpedo-carrying B-26's sent from Midway Island to attack the Japanese carriers. USAAF B-17's likewise bomb the Japanese carrier force without success.
The TBF Grumman Avenger flown by pilots of a shore-based element of Torpedo Squadron 8, began its combat career with attacks on the Japanese Fleet ; 5 of 6 shot down.
Concentrating on recovery of Midway air forces, the Japanese carriers were caught unprepared for the U.S. carrier air attack.
Torpedo bombers (TBD's) from American carrier striking force Hornet (CV-8), Enterprise (CV-6), and Yorktown (CV-5) attack the enemy carriers. Although mauled by the defending combat air patrol and antiaircraft fire, they draw off the Zeros and leave the skies open for dive bombers (SBD's) from Enterprise and Yorktown.
SBD's from Enterprise sink carrier Kaga and bomb Akagi (flagship) SBD's ; SBD's from Yorktown bomb and sink carrier Soryu.
Submarine Nautilus (SS-168) torpedoes carrier Kaga but her "fish" do not explode.
Hiryu escapes destruction that morning, launches dive bombers that temporarily disable Yorktown. Fletcher transfers flag to Astoria (CA-34) .
A second Japanese counter attack 2 hours later, damages Yorktown with bombs and torpedoes so severely that she was abandoned.
In the late afternoon, SBD's from Enterprise, mostily Yorktown planes, hit the Japanese Force again, striking Hiryu, the fourth and last of the Japanese carriers.
TF-16 (Spruance) released at dusk to fight the next day.
With control of the air irretrievably lost, the Japanese are compelled to abandon Midway invasion plans and the invasion force retires westward.

June 4-5. Overnight
Three Japanese fleets, with ten battleships, including Yamato, the world's largest battleship, two escort carriers, cruisers, and destroyers race to engage the U.S. carriers.
The U.S. fleet withdraws till midnight, then returns to the protective air cover of Midway.
Finding nothing, the Japanese battle fleets also withdraws.

June 5. Battle of Midway continues as U.S. seeks retiring Japanese fleets.
Salvage underway on crippled carrier Yorktown
Japanese carriers Akagi and Hiryu are scuttled. Heavy cruisers Mogami and Mikuma are damaged in collision while avoiding submarine Tambor (SS-198).
Planes from Japanese carriers Ryujo and Junyo again attack Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
Japanese troops occupy Attu, Aleutians, without opposition.
U.S. Task Force One of 6 battleships link up west of San Francisco.
Long Island (AVG-1) arrives San Francisco, joins TF 1 battleships as scout.
FDR promises in-kind retrobution if Japan continues to use poison gas in China.

June 6. Battle of Midway concludes as carrier planes sink damaged heavy cruiser Mikuma.
Meanwhile, Japanese submarine I-168 finds Yorktown (CV-5) under tow, torpedoes Yorktown and destroyer Hammann (DD-412) alongside.
Carrier TF 16 changes course to eastward to refuel and breaks contact with the enemy.
The Battle of Midway, one of the most decisive battles in naval history, marks the turning point of the Pacific War. The decisive defeat administered to the Japanese put an end to their successful offensive and effectively turned the tide of the Pacific War. Japanese losses total four fleet carriers, one heavy cruiser, 258 aircraft, and a large percentage of experienced carrier pilots. United States losses are 40 shore-based and 92 carrier aircraft, and the destroyer Hammann and the carrier Yorktown, the result of a single submarine attack. The significance of the victory was not completely recognized at the time.
FDR warns Japan to stop using chemical weapons in China.

June 7. Carrier Yorktown (CV-5) sinks as the result of heavy damage incurred on 4 and 6 June.
In the wake of the battle, efforts to locate downed aviators persist over the ensuing days.
Japanese troops occupy Kiska, Aleutians, without opposition.
Saratoga replenishes Enterprise and Hornet with aircraft to go intercept Japanese Alaska task force.
June 8. Part of Japanese Midway force is sent to reinforce Alaska force : 2 BB, 1 CVE, 2 CA.
June 9. USAAF claims victory at Midway ; in fact, no land-based aircraft hit any warships.
Jun 10. Wasp (CV-7), North Carolina (BB-55), Quincy (CA-39), San Juan (CL-54 ) and 6 destroyers transit the Panama Canal became TF 18 (RAdm Noyes).
Jun 10. Patrol planes discovered the presence of the enemy on Kiska and Attu -- the first news of Japanese landings that had taken place on the 7th.
Jun 11-13. PBY Catalinas, operating from the seaplane tender Gillis in Nazan Bay, Atka Island, hit ships and enemy positions on Kiska in an intense 48-hour attack which exhausted the gasoline and bomb supply aboard the Gillis but was not successful in driving the Japanese from the Island.
Jun 12. Japanese Alaska force further reinforced with fleet carrier Zuikaku, and 2 heavy cruisers in a last attempt to trap the U.S. carriers which had withdrawn.
Jun 12. B-17's and B-24's raid Kiska, damaging Japanese destroyer Hibiki.
Jun 13. Saratoga, Enterprise, Hornet return to Pearl.
Jun 13. U-boat landing of 4 German saboteurs at Amagansett, Long Island.

Looks like there are other ideas coming from players too. Thanks guys!

I think this may be able to be done. I've not looked into the specific Harbor files yet, but if I'm going to make a pre war start.....Pearl is going to have a "face lift" regarding its Harbor look and make-up of assets positioned there. And, if my plan is to have the Pearl Harbor Attack Mission, there will definitively be some changes done.

However, you should note, the damage done to Battle Ship Row was never completely cleaned up. Especially during the war. The Oklahoma is the BB capsized during the attack. She wasn't righted until November 1943, yet never used for the remainder of the war. I don't know where they put her, but it wasn't until 1947 did the Navy think they could tow her back to the mainland. It was during that tow she capsized again and sunk...this time for good. Of course the Arizona was never moved. So, to remove all the damaged ships in Pearl would not be the thing to do.

The more I think about it, especially on this Memorial Day, I'm likely to leave the Harbor just as it is after December 7th.

Good Memorial Day to you all!!

KiUB is a big influence for the project......with a different look
IIRC Karamazovnew released an excel worksheet to help calculating position and size of items. Having done your excellent SCAF tool you should however already know which direction to go

Nisgeis worked on a completely interactive and clickable 3D TDC and an amazing radar mod, the first was not completely finished and the second was released but never incorporated to any major supermod, probably because you had to do again all the 3d editing and improving that had been included over the years in the models. You should contact him regarding that 3D TDC, could solve several problems in an easy and realistic way.

There is some of that in the messages.txt file already. I don't think more would be a problem though.

Only problem with those is they're written for current times. A lot of that info wasn't known at the time it happened, or even until well after the war. So it wouldn't be accurate without some editing and other research.

Sure. I might start this week in fact.

Agree completely.

I'm very enthusiastic about this mod Cpt. Scurvy! I'm more interested in the realism aspect of it though. I've used RFB since it's beginning, along with RSRD and assorted enhancement mods. Unfortunately as I'm sure you're aware, work on RFB has all but ceased, and has become a bit stale. I'm in the market for something new, and this may be it! I'm not too keen on mods that alter reality for the sake of more challenging gameplay. I hope folks don't take that the wrong way, it's just me. I hope your mod will have enough realism ( as much as could be expected from a computer sim) to keep the "hard core guys" interested. Good luck with your project!

Well, so do I.

Realism.....Gameplay
Realism.....Gameplay

That's the balance which makes any simulation worth playing. As a "gamer" (I've been one since playing my first Avalon Hill board game at age 11), I know there has to be a balance between the two. For instance, a player wants realism.....yet no game, or mod, has us traveling in real time to our patrol point. Time compression is a must, because who wants to spend a week's worth of real time getting to your assigned area? But, the truth is.....that is REALISTIC!! What one person see's as realism, another see's it as folly. The best game should have content for both sides, allowing for several ways to play, depending on the player to choose his realism level.

Some mods have restricted navigation aids, or removed specific elements of the game for the sake of "realism". However, I see no reason to do this IF the stock game has an option setting that allows you to remove it when you want. I don't think a mod should remove game play features just for the sake of "realism"......yet they allow Time Compression to exist?!? I'm all for realism, but not at the adverse effect to gameplay.

I don't know how many of you have run across the U.S. Naval Technical Mission report of Japan's scientific and technological developments during the war? It's interesting to learn some of the findings we made after the war. Frankly, some aspects of their development are quite surprising. The general rule being.....we gave them too much credit for their technology!! I'll balance gameplay and realism based on readings like these.

Capn and all,

Any way to remotely replicate the SH5 "Real Nav" mod in SH4?

Is there a way to toggle on and off your own-sub's position in-game. (I'm thinking: leave it off except for "taking a fix" (by turning it back on) every two hours or so (or when needed)) to replicate a bit of uncertainty whilst navigating.

What about navigational bouys in and around ports? (Red right returning...) Anyone interested in this?

I like the buoyes idea, but as a younger subsimmer I don't really support the "real nav thing" I like having the dot on the map for the sub.

One thing that I'm hoping for is more harbor traffic, the original sh4 didn't have a lot of traffic. Another thing would be more defenses around big jap ports like Hiroshima and by defense I mean sup nets around capital ships and mines at the port entrances.
