The war ended in 1945.

The emphasis then turned to commercial growers as opposed to home gardens but there are still some avid vegetable growers who use their rear gardens or take on an allotment but much fewer in number as each year passes by.

A bigger property seems nice ... at first. But, what do we really do with it? Not much. Sure, we could host a party of several dozen people comfortably. But the reality is that most of the time it's just a pain in the arse.

Even though our property is relatively small for this area, I often envy people who "only" have a postage stamp sized yard to deal with.

YUP! YARD WASTE IS A PROBLEMO. WE SHARE THE THE BROWN YARD-WASTE DUMSTERS ON OUR STREET (THERE ARE THREE: GARBAGE, RECYCLE AND YARD-WASTE-PER HOUSEHOLD) SO IF ONE HAS A BIG PROJECT-MAJOR PRUNING ETC IT'S NO HASSLE. HALF MY YARD(8000 SQ FT) IS FORMAL GARDENS AND LAWNS; THE SIDE AND REAR HALF ARE A LARGE GARDEN BOXED (4) FOR OUR 'VICTORY GARDEN' PEAS, SQUASH, ZUCCHINI, CARROTS, LETTUCE, GREEN AND YELLOW BEANS, ONIONS, TOMATOES, CORN, PUMPKINS, MELONS AND BASIL AND ROSEMARY. ONE BOX IS FOR RASPBERRIES AND I HAVE GLEANING PRIVILEGES FROM MY NEIGHBORS APRICOT AND PEACH TREES AS MY WIFE LIKES TO CAN HER OWN JAMS. ALL MY YARD TOOLS ARE ELECTRIC INCL THE CHAINSAW FOR VICIOUS ROSE TREES, SO NO GASOLINE TO STORE IN THE GARAGE. EATING A SALAD FROM YOUR GARDEN AND PUTTING YOUR OWN JAM ON ENGLISH MUFFINS IS A REAL KICK.

When I was a kid every household had just one of these

We had one of these when I got married and got my own place, but now we can have up to three different coloured big plastic wheelie-bins outside our houses (landfill/recycling/garden)

The bin men would come and empty one tin bin every week and that was enough for most folks... it just shows how things have changed

Arrgh, a trip down memory lane when snickers were marathon and analogue TV had only three stations up to 1982. Those were the days care free when men were real men and women were real women and a pint of beer was less than a pound, and PC madness was a joke.

Like you Eich, those wheely bins and boxes and all those regulations and collection dates have sent it all to pot.

That reminds me of the time in 1977 when I was a marine engineer......prior to going away the chocolate bar was called Marathon and during the course of a three month trip I came across Snickers in one or two countries which had me thinking 'These are blatant copies of the Marathon'.

Returned back to the UK anf realised the name had been changed

Was that the time you got back to your house and found all the locks had been changed too?

Some junk would not change much right now.. in the middle of re-arranging the "garden".

Wasn't married then, simply a free spirit sailing the worlds oceans and partying in each port we dropped anchor
