Default A bug? or operator error....

Hi all, I just started running RSRD for TMO last week and had a weird, career-ending, mis-adventure.

I got orders to go patrol the Kiska resupply routes and potentially intercept an expected convoy then end up by refuelling at Dutch Harbor. Well, I missed the convoy, but ended up in Dutch Harbor as instructed. I got the refuel/rearm done with and since it was the middle of the night, I decided to TC until daylight so I could actually see what was up around there (never been up there before). As the clock was spinning, I got POUNDED by something.....100% hull damage, bulkheads destroyed, 3 compartments flooding, all tubes destroyed ect. As my boat was foundering and obviously done in, I noticed the harbor icon up in the corner and out of desperation, I clicked on it. Instantly all the flooding was gone, I still had 100% hull damage and the crew kept up the "stern tubes destroyed, bow tubes destroyed" over and over, until I finally just ended the game and tried to reload it. Every reload attempt gave me a CTD on that career.......so , I just ended up starting a new campaign, but I can't help wondering WTF happened, both at the refuel point-while TC-ing and after.

Anybody else come across something like this?

A mine will definitely do that. I don't believe there's any way of knowing for certain. Personally, I'm not aware of any bugs that do that.

Agreed.

Sounds more like a mine than a bug.

They're no mines in that area in RSRD.

If you click on the refit tab, it will fix cetain things, etc, so that probably repaired flooding, but the 100% bulkhead damage is permanant and can only be fixed at your docking base.

Could it be possible you hit a reef or land, some are so small you don't see them unless you zoom. Did you run into a friendly ship near the port. Did you have air radar, maybe a enemy plane.

Some things will make high TC rates to instantly drop, such as getting close to land. However....

Some reefs or small islands, the kind that barely appear in your map unless you zoom in a lot, will not decrease your TC, and it may happen that you run aground in a reef or something. When the TC rate is high enough, it may even happen that you travel several miles (in split-seconds) until TC is finally lowered - so that you look around and don't even understand what the hell hapened.

Dead stop in a friendly port (not a mine, I think).......I think it was a TC issue, but who knows? I'm chalking it up to unfortunate friendly fire......

-I had a great career going til that patrol. Oh well, I got another one started.

You hit the refit button, then you TCed and watched the clock spinning, you received damage and then hit the refit button again?
How long did you TC for before the damage occurred? I mean, how far did you get from the refit port when this all happened? It almost sounds like your sub may have been motionless when you started to TC.

I obviously didn't read the first post properly

TC'ing in a friendly port?

Sure somebody didn't just sail right into you?

You're not alone! I mis-read his original post too. Tc'ing at a dead stop in a friendly port. Now it sounds more likely that Eric simply got run over, as you have suggested.

Yup, just passing time 'til daylight in the middle of the bay. I didn't see anything around except a PT boat or two. I figured that they couldn't/wouldn't hurt me, ooops.

I could have been run over, but it's NEVER happened to me before .

What really got me ....the CTD's when trying to reload the game. That hasn't happened since I first started playing unmodded, unpatched SH4 stock.

I was kinda hoping someone would pipe in with "don't do _________. It crashes the game.....EVERYBODY knows that!!!"

Don't know if this fits your situation, but I haven't had a CTD or a failed save/load since running the utility that allows the game to utilize more than 2Mb of RAM. I don't have the link to the program, but you can find it somewhere in this forum on a search. BTW, I also run SHIII under the same specs, with similar results. Hope this helps.

Edit: Oops! Think I meant 2GB of RAM!

Using mods is like having 5 wives. You need to learn each one specifically, but then how to deal with them all together. The problem is they may say they have no problems with the other wives, but put them all under one roof and all hell breaks loose.

Still, I run about 16 mods and haven't had a issue in years. TMO and RSRD are very stable mods, I think any problems with CTD's arise from still stock issues or just peoples different specs and software.

Almost alway friendly ships will steer away or try to avoid you, however at high TC often that doesn't give them enough time to react. There are a few escorts that patrol Brisbane that I have ran into. Yep, the game will auto slow TC when you come in contact, but many up it back after each contact and bam. One of my best patrols, over 200K, I came into Brisbane and got the contact for that escort and game slowed. I increased it to about 500 to hurry to dock, figured no way I would run into it, BAM...sunk, barely had enough time to hit the cam to see my sub stuck into the DD.

If you use TC near ports, use only enough so you can view your contacts.

AHHH PT Boat!!. I had a PT boat run into my Boat in Java. They are sometimes very stupid. I often see pt boats on fire, sinking or just plain sailing right into your boat. The PT boat in Java kept crossing my bow then going into reverse and crossing again, and the reason we crashed is that I expected him not to ram me when I passed him. Just weird. Anyway, If you see PT boats in the area, beware!

You said it, mate!

Anyways, high TC is a cause of problems with every version of the game, modded or not. The CPU simply can't manage that much information with the TC going through the roof. It simply has no time to calculate everything. This is the reason 90% of people run into beaches, reefs, other ships etc. The CPU simply has no time to calculate everything until it's too late.
