Default SH 4 or 5 with mods as good as or better than SH3 GWX?

Used to play SH3 GWX a lot in the old days. Lots changed in the years after.

I wonder if SH4 or SH5 (with mods) comes close or are perhaps even better than SH3 GWX by now or does SH3 GWX still carry the crown?

The Wolves Of Steel is the ultimate mega mod for SH5 and takes the game to whole new level and 100% ctd free.

SH4 you have a lot more choice and it depends on what you want from the game.
My SH4 mega mod based on GFO is well worth a look as is FOTRSU.
The TMO mega mod with RSRDC ups the difficulty level.

I'm playing SH3 + GWX3 or SH3 + WAC5.01 as well as SH5 + TWoS, I like all very much and I can give you some meaningful differences:

- SH5 + TWoS has the top grafics of the series and all sub interiors present that work flawlessly because already designed for the stock game;

- GWX3 has a lot of historical scenarios added to the game, but so does SH5 with its campaign and the TWoS mod; it would be very subjective saying that one is better than the other, so I'm not going to try.

- SH5 + TWoS is top notch in realistic play (you can chose 'Real Navigation' or not) with some nice additions like Automation Features that will allow you to automatically run an evasion pattern, navigating out of ports, or an automated mix of submerged and surfaced operations. There is nothing like that in other SH series;

- The campaign in SH5+TWoS is something to get used to, but you have total freedom to play like you want while certainly keeping the level of all historical scenarios present in GWX3. In SH5 you can accept missions and receive special missions during your patrol which is not true in SH3 where you are only ordered to patrol a quadrant, but in both cases what counts at the end is your tonnage. In SH5 there is also 'KSD Commander', an equivalent of SH3 Commander adding further to setup your campaign the way you want, the savegames are highly editable too (spawn date, spawn at port etc.)

- SH3 has the better crew management features, in this regard SH5 is more limited

- SH3 can be played 'faster' in that you can use keyboard shortcuts to quickly change the stations. In SH5 there is a 'Teleport' feature but all in all you need to walk more through the compartments, but that may be what you want, more sub compartments mean more immersion. Also the deck gun/AA gun operations are more complex and not as easy as they should in SH5.

- A result from the last 2 points above, from my personal experience SH5 is 'harder' to play than any SH3 + megamod, but it's also more eye-candy and rewarding. But this is not a judgement, only my experience.

I hope this helps you, I wish you fun with both simulations, they are certainly all worth to install and play!
Cheers,

All SH are fun to play and i have all 3 installed on my rig.
They all have good and bad things. Best would be a mix of all 3!

SH5 is pretty complicated to install correctly with all patches and takes hours of reading so you apply to the letter the instructions (furthermore for a steam download as mine)
But now so is SH3 GWX3 with all exe patches! (4GB patch, H.sie etc)
SH4 might be the easiest to install.

Now, trying to be objective, the best and the bad from my experience...

SH5 TWOS what i like:

- best clouds ever
- best environment lightings
- very good boats rendering
- best sub interior
- best crew animation
- very good campaign gameplay
- good overall atmosphere
- ability to move everywhere inside the sub
- sub external rendering
- damaged effects
- full real navigation
- lot of life everywhere

What i dislike:

- steam and Uplay
- loading time
- gelly waves rendering
- fog for days
- weather change each save/load
- récurent bugs (telegraph dials, boats sink marks etc)
- unable to save on patrol zone without starting over
- some annoying stutters (mainly inside)

SH4 TMO/OM/FOTRS what i like:

- loading time
- the gameplay theater change (Pacific war)
- water transparency
- good boats rendering
- good sub external rendering
- game very fluent on my rig
- the sinking physics
- underwater view
- sun/moon water reflection

What i dislike:

- days without any encounter (mainly TMO)
- weather rendering
- fog rendering
- récurent bugs (sun through crew/sub)
- Uber DDs

SH3 GWX3 what i like:

- loading time
- waves rendering (MEP V6)
- 20km environment rendering (MEP V6)
- weather changes (H.sie patch)
- best sound mod (Thomsen)
- global atmosphere and weather atmosphere
- SH3 Commander
- Crew management
- external sub rendering (U-Boat compilation)
- internal sub rendering (FM new interior)
- life everywhere
- game very fluent

What i dislike:

- crew rendering (a bit outdated)
- underwater view
- obligation to have a widescreen gui mod (limited choice)
- some lights through deck crew
- crew not changing clothes in storms (only done manually)

You forgot to add to SH 5 ONLY Type VII. Plus if you know russian language you can use for SH 4 with KSD II. Its best mod for Sh 4 if you want to play with U-boats way better then OM, one big disadavantage has that is in RUSSIAN.

One thing that makes SH3 better to my eyes, is the 20Km atmosphere rendering such as in MEP V6.
It’s kind of killing me in SH5 or even worst in SH4. It’s a bit immersion killing IMHO.
When used to see it in SH3, it’s a pain to draw back the atmosphere in SH5/4.
But maybe FOTRSUltimate has it...don’t know, never tried it.
When observing boats far away, it’s night and day between those SH. Furthermore when up to 10 knots wind.

Maybe it’s hard coded in SH4/5, so no one made a 20Km atmosphere mod
