I'd use the stock. At a glance the only difference I see is one minute (file date 6/8/2013 8:11 PM, the other is 8:12 PM) but from what I've read the optical targeting correction mods make manual targeting more accurate, but to do that they had to make automatic targeting less accurate.

By the way, I should add here that the stock 1.5 sonar fix also works in 1.4, no problems.

Thank you for the suggestion and for your analysis.

Unfortunately, after installing the version of the mod made for the stock game SH4 crashes to desktop upon loading my campaign save.

I think I'll just live with the hydrophone bug. It's not too terrible to use the mouse scroll wheel.

I'm to the point where I just want to give up on the problem and play the game (if you know what I mean).

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me!

Most people recommend deleting all save games and starting a new career when you replace a file that affects the operation of the sub. One exception I've found is the autosaves (Autosave_OnLeavingBase_1 for example) because when you leave the base to start a new patrol, it loads all the files from the start. Loading in the middle of a patrol causes crashes because there's a conflict between the information in the save file and the new data in the altered file - example, the new file says max speed is 21 knots, the save file already has the 18 knot max speed stored, program crashes.

Way to save a career in that situation, return to base, end patrol, exit the game, install new file or files, then load the Autosave_OnEnteringBase_1 (or whatever the latest is) and start the next patrol. None of the data from the previous file is in the in-base file, so there's no conflict, it reloads everything fresh including whatever is in the new file or files.

Yea the save games are really strange for SH3-4.

If you use one save file for your entire career it isn't a question of if that save will corrupt but when. And it eventually will corrupt.

I do this for saves: SGP1S1(Slyguy Patrol 1 Save 1). Then the next save is 2. Get to port, start a new patrol, now it's SGP2S1 (Slyguy Patrol 2 Save 1). So on and so forth.

Excellent advice, both of you.

I did indeed install the mod when out away from base.

I'll take to heart what you said, wait until the end of the patrol, and then try again.

When I save, I give it a name that (very) briefly describes my situation.
Patrol 2 reached my zone would be like ' P2 in zone'.
After using the last save, when I go to save again, before I do, I delete all but the last save. (So I know I have a good one in case the one I'm doing gets corrupted.)

Keeps the save files down to a minimum that way.
