Default Help / Questions regarding TWoS.

1. Everytime i try load into a patrol i get the "Internet experiences problems" popup. Took me awhile to figure out you just need to push ESC to cancel it and keep playing but it's annoying. How do i fix that?

2. Is automatic campaign advancement broken in TWoS? I've played to the end of two campaigns now (the first two), and both times it failed to advance. I had to resort to the fix that requires you to start a dummy campaign and copy some of its files to your current campaign.

3. UBoat upgrades seem wonky. I played through the entire 1st campaign in a 7A (full realism), sunk a crap ton of ships, and was never offered the upgrade to a 7B. After the campaign transfer issue, i decided to start the second campaign (happy times) fresh. Played the entire campaign in a 7B and was never offered the upgrade to a 7C, until i came into port a few several days after the campaign was over (because the campaign transfer had failed).

4. Is it normal to have to go flank speed when really deep (200+) just to keep depth? If i slow down i start to sink further.

5. Night surface attacks in 1940 shouldn't be that hard. I think out of 20 surface attacks vs convoy, i was only able to get away once while on the surface, and that was because i attacked from extra long range. Every other time the escorts found me VERY quickly and i was forced to dive. I would attack the convoy's flank from like 3-4000m and immediately turn away and run while decks awash. Didn't matter. Soon as the torpedoes hit, the escorts turned and ran me down.

6. Is it ok to disable the orbit listener stuff in the patcher without issues? And can i disable the uplay browser in the patcher and still play campaign? I read some post where someone recommended to do that but the patcher explicitly says you wont be able to play campaign if you do.

7. How much of the radio message traffic is just "fluff". Does any of it actually happen in the game? Are there any messages besides contact reports that are worth investigating?

for example:
Reports of Convoys leaving on specific dates. Other U-Boat traffic with regards to convoys in grid locations (eg. AM48). etc. etc.

I got tired of the barrage of messages and disabled it from knocking my TC down to 1. I mostly just ignore/skim over them every so often.

8. Do wolfpacks ever show up when you send contact reports? I always get the no units in your area, attack on own data, be more aggresive responses from BdU.

I can help with some of this.

1) are you patched to 1.2 from Ubisoft? You should not have internet issues, so unless its an issue in your country or if you have not uploaded the patch this may be the issue.

2) When you start your save game, the campaign advance tester whould start and tell you if it has failed or succeeded. Then you have to be out in patrol while the campaign transfers over. In your TWoS documents there are dates that tell you when campaigns and missions begin and end. If you are in the pens during this transfer of dates, you will have issues.

3) Yes it is wonky as you put it. I bet you should have more ingame awards than you do. This is a bug I believe, and it is a reason you get the "start campaign with 7B mod". You just have to wait for Doenitz to issue you your new boat friend.

4) At extreme depths In Real Life, the water pressure is just playing havoc on all of your boats seals, valves, and hull. While flank is a little much, I can understand why. In TWoS you can select the engineer and manually order the dive planes (awesome addition by the way), and this can help you maintain your boat depth. I highly suggest this, than burning precious amps in flank speed.

5) This game is awesome that it models time, and weather, and moonlight well. If the moon is out, you will be seen. If you have the 60 m/s windspeed on like me, and you are decks awash, your boat will go under water from time to time, and the engines will be heard by escorts as your boat bobs up and down the extreme levels! Ive tested this many times, it does happen!
If you are attacking on the surface, you have to take these things into account. The darkness is your wife, the fog your girlfriend, the moon your mistress! You have to juggle all of them so they do not kill you!

6) Unsure, never tried it.

7) Most fluff, but you will receive radio reports on convoys, and contacts in your area. Pay attention.

8) Depending on the year of the war. In the beginning you do not get wolfpacks, as there are not enough boats. But I believe they do appear later. Soon friend, you will hunt in your pack.

1. I did this install from uplay download. It was already patched to v1.2. I have a retail disc if there is a difference in it being patched to 1.2 vs the uplay download. Unlikely.

Its just stupid, i launched the frigging game from within uplay while im connected, but the game always bitches about internet connection. Maybe that is the reason im having campaign transfer issues.

2. I know all about the transfer dates. I followed all the instructions and radio messages (staying at sea, not returning to port before a certain date etc. etc.). It just never happens. I enabled the tester, and it fails as well when i load a savegame.

Ok when this fails as it does for me, you need to exit to main menu, not exit to desktop! and reselect the save game, and try again. Keep doing this until it says it successfully started. You may have to do this a couple of times.

Not in TWoS...There is a problem with SH5 launcher, but usually one or reloads will solve the issue...I set up in game radio messages to instruct the player what to do in this case.

Negative. U-boat upgrades work just fine but you have to have positive captains rating which can be seen in your KSD commander. Every patrol without any tonage will lower your rating (-1 point). 1000 renown points per patrol = +1 point...

This is not necessary but you have to know how to manage extreme depths. I talked a lot about this.

It's important to remember that escorts in SH5 have kind of "investigate" strategy and when torpedoes hit, they will be able to assume your approximate location and then initiate their sensors search, just like in real life...

No...With those patches enabled, automatic campaign progression and transfers will be completely blocked...

Only contact reports from your Cpt log are the real one. You have the range filter in the upper right corner, which will port useful (close) contact reports to your message box and ships journal as well...

Yes , they do...Don't expect much from AI submarines because most of the time they wont be able to spot the convoy at all (especially if it's dark) but they can sometimes be a nice distracting elements for escorts...

So, what is your current rating in KSD commander?

That was all from the Happy Times campaign (June 1940 - March 1941).

Just figured i would get the 7c before that campaign ended. Didn't get it until i pulled into port on March 7th after the campaign had already ended.

No big deal.
