I guess the Red Light Mod somehow was strictly forbidden by der BdU for it's not a standard operation procedures. So just forget about the red light thing and just wait for the sunset patiently to get your little red lighs automatically on.

The only mentioned variant, to switch blue light, I could find in the "Torpedo Shooting Regulation for Submarines" (M.Dv. 416/3), which was valid for submarine types II, VII, IX and X. There, “switching the blue light” means that for a necessary perception of the periscope, the transmission of the now changing bearing angle is no longer passed on to the torpedoes via torpedo calculator and the GA actuator.
