Default How Real is DW RA .

Just wonder does anyone have an opinion (or 2) as to how real DW with RA mod is compared to real world sub driving and underwater battle?

RA is set up for multiplayer gaming and RA is what it is.

In some ways, you answered your own question.

Think about how many massive sub battles have occurred since WWII.
Now, think about how many ships have been sunk by torpedoes during the same time frame. After the Gen. Belgrano, the list gets really short. "Wolfpack" attack sub tactics haven't been used since WWII.

The Sonalyst's games from 688i and Fleet Command onward were about hypothetical combat (for a good reason). Cold Waters is the same idea.
DW's stock campaign is fairly low-key compared to other games in the genre. It reflected the reality of the early 2000's.

In the end, it was really good that the cold war stayed cold.

Not that we didn't practice for a hot war, a lot..

Thanks ET2. Actually what I meant is the physics side of the modelling, in terms of the environment, weapons, general physics stuff ...

It's hard question to answer. RA modders tries to make RA as much realistic as possible but some informations are classified.

In other hand, some things are moddeled only for "game purpose" like in vanilla DW (ex: TASM and Harpoons were removed from real LA class and Sizzlers were not in service when DW was released, Red October -Typhoon class is only fiction etc.)

For me its doesn't matter because it's very unique game - not comparable to other titles.
Btw DW is not detailed simulation where you have to switch every single button or knob (like DCS or Falcon BMS) because many things are automatic. It's more tactical-level simulator of single platform.

DW is a game.

You get exposed to things like thermoclines and currents and you react to take advantage of them.

To accurately model the ocean in a mission would take dozens of super computers and it still wouldn't get close to what's really going on.
The ocean is a dynamic environment, DW gives you a taste of what its like.
I've had to deal with state five seas or greater and a week later the same location has water calmer than your bathtub or a glass of milk.

NOBODY is going to tell you how effective the weapons are in reality. We get news reports and propaganda to work with, but NO one is going to show you their real cards. We can get a good idea how effective something is by peaking at tests or exercises but you don't bet the farm on those observations.

On the other hand, DW gives you a lot that you won't find in other games. Try to fly over the north pole in Flight Sim. You wind up wall sliding 85 miles before you get there. You can create a mission in DW where you place a sub five miles from the pole and then wander around until you get there.
You can't surface there due to the ice thickness but you can surface within five miles of it.
DW accounts for the surface of the earth. You can't see a contact until your scope is high enough to see over the horizon. These features weren't even new when DW came out, you can observe the same stuff in 688i.

Thanks folks. Great to know we have a great game on hands to indulge in. Just hoping that the Physics modelling is close enough for at least partial believing.
