It's in the carrier patrol circle, at least sometimes. That's where I found mine. It took a bit of searching, though.

I found and sunk it in the circle, northwestern corner.

I only have a week or two left to compelte this. It's mid feb 1940.

I got 3 of the 5 up north, and already have the carrier.

Doesn't this issue highlight a problem with the mission scoring system? If you sink a carrier which is supposed to be sunk for a later mission, that should automatically be added to the relevant mission regardless of which mission is your currently selected one.

I stumbled across the carrier in the western mouth of the channel while I was doing the "100000 ton" mission. Not knowing that this was a target of the blockade mission, I tried my luck and managed to sink that beast.
When I then started the blockade mission, the white bar of the carrier mission goal was already at 100%"! So obviously, the carrier has been counted as "mission fulfilled" although I had not started this mission yet

Can anybody else confirm that it works in the way that you can actually complete the objectives regardless of whether they belong to your currently chosen mission?

What are the criteria? Does the mission have to be available? I.e. can you sink the carrier even before the "Blockade" mission becomes available and still score?

More knowledge about these mechanisms would sure ease the pain of this badly documented sim...

After reading some stuff in this thread I cruised over to plymouth last night to have a look around, and lo and behold - HMS Ark Royal.

I creep into the port (not quite all the way, it gets FAR too shallow about 4km off the dock) and had a look to see what i could see. No aircraft carrier in port.

so I slowly turn around and go to leave, when suddenly - lo and behold - thar she blows. big as all getout, jinking back and forth like she knows i'm there already, steaming along at top speed.

i kill the e-motors, and just watch for a while, dipping my periscope whenever any of the ~10 DDs get too close for comfort. There's no room to dive more than another 10 meters below periscope depth so I REALLY don't want to get caught before I at least take a shot at her.

After about 20 minutes I realise she's not coming in to port to stop, she's just banging about the harbour. after marking a few waypoints over the next half hour I realise she's not really following any kind of patrol pattern, or if she is, it's a long and convoluted one.

I get as close as I can to a point i've seen her cross over 3-4 times in the hope she'll be back there, and wait. soon enough (by which I mean I've been waiting for a few realtime hours now, very much time compressed) I see her heading directly for my position. I hit back slow and start setting up a firing solution.

I decide I'm going to fire off a salvo of two on magnetic triggers and another two on impact, to allow for the fact that I've only ever had one mag-pistol shot work in SHV.

Tubes 1 and 2 go straight under her keel, and do absolutely nothing.

tube 3 scoots straight across her bow, missing by about 3 meters. DAMN.

Tube 4 just barely clips the bow, but in this strange damage model, it's enough. One small boom, immediately followed by the mother of all explosions as the whole ship just goes pop.

The bow sinks rapidly, and soon the stern is sticking up out of the water. I hear that massive metallic 'BOOM' as the bow hits the bottom, and the map registers the kill.

I cheer a little (5 years of silent hunting and this is my first AC kill ever) but it feels a little... flat. I did the whole thing manually, (and badly too, given how only 1 eel of a salvo of 4 hit) but honestly... a single impact triggered torp on the bow of an aircraft carrier should barely have left a SCRATCH.

In SH3 I would've had to sit on the bottom reloading for another few hours, and then tried again, while ashcans rained around me. Instead I blew the HMS Ark Royal out of the water with one badly aimed shot, and slid on out of the harbour without the DD escort even putting up a fight.

NOT A SINGLE DEPTH CHARGE was dropped in the whole business.

I'm glad I got away with it and completed the mission. I'm glad I got my first AC kill. But I really wish they'd made it harder for me. even if they'd just fired up the search lights and pinged around the place a bit I would've felt like I'd achieved something more significant...

Anyone else have similar experiences?

Took a shot at a QE battleship up North, 2 out of a spread of 4 connected and she went down. Rest of the taskforce steamed on. Heard some pings but they didn't find me.

Imho it just depends on their doctrine, they can be set to both 'defensive' and 'offensive'. Have seen a lot of different behaviour, from total indifference to pounding my predicted position untill charges run out and even then still keep circling.

Just finished up this mission. I had sunk the Ark Royal in earlier missions and it did not count towards the Blockade goal. I was fearing that I was royally screwed on completing this one...

I finished the Northern goal by sitting right by the patrol line arrow off of Scotland and kept using Reveal Hidden enemies to find the armed victims.

Luckily I found another carrier (Hermes Fleet Carrier) and escort screen sailing between Plymouth and Cherbourgh. I managed to position myself where I'd be inside the screen if they passed by and went down to around 100m. Sure enough the plot was good and they came past, I popped up to periscope depth and fired a snap salvo at the carrier. Two hits out of four, but she was badly damaged and stopped in her tracks. The escorts took great offense to that and came after me with a vengeance. I snuck out of the depth charge barrage (which was a bit dicey there for a bit) taking a fair amount of damage but staying intact. I was able to get clear and fire off another two eels which blew her to kingdom come.

I killed the HMS Queen Elizabeth (which for a Frenchman was delectable) with one torpedo hit at the bow. And of course, none of it's escort try to even locate me... They just sailed away.

well by shear luck i stumbled upon a carrier, to my horror tho it was thick fog so i had to go full speed into the task force, visibility was prolly 50 meters so same sec i could get a visual i fired all my torps and dove for the sea bottom

Then i get the last mission for the area to sink a battleship in march 1940 for the invasion of norway horror story that one also god bless thick fog :P

Damnit, not only is it difficult to find one of these stupid patrol ships to sink, but when I do, they move SO DAMN ERRATICALLY that I can't even hit them. I found one, I fired some torpedoes at the right time (when the 3s aligned) and just as they were about to hit, the stupid thing does a quick turn and avoids them all.

And not only that, one I found kept moving away from me until it hit the shore and exploded! What the hell is wrong with these things and why are they impossible to hit? And where's the best section of the Northern Patrol so I can find SOMETHING worth shooting and killing? Merchant ships keep popping up but they are more of a nuisance...

DITTO! yeah mate, same experienced here. I was going through dover street and encountered AC group TWICE!

Just intercepted, went on periscope depth when in the middle of the group and sank the carrier with a 4 salvo. The first hit already destroyed the carrier epically... I mean, like the torpedo was equipped with a thermonuclear warhead

Anyway, went to 80m and escaped. Not one asdig ping was issued. I escaped flawlessly. Not one deptcharge was dropped.

Half a day later (ingame) the same thing happend again.

Sunk 2 carriers without getting a scratch... WTF? this is TOOOO easy

I hope the one mission to sink the carrier will be done.

About the Carrier, I decided to put the Northern Patrol on hold (because I can't find anything) to see if I can find that thing. The patrol circle was empty, so I decided to check out Plymouth. That place is CRAWLING with warships, and I just couldn't seem to be able to get close enough to see if I can find the carrier. How the heck do you get close enough without being spotted?
