Default SH3 relative newbie here, questions about mods

Hi, I've been playing SH3 for a week or two now, I installed the Living 2015 mod (think it was the first big mod I came across that came highly recommended) almost straight away so haven't spent much time in vanilla SH3. I'm currently playing my first career, four patrols in and it's December 1939, doing quite well (on about 87% realism).

There are a few little things I don't understand that don't seem to be mentioned in the SH3 manual, and one or two frustrations with the game engine, but more on those later.

First question - is the Living 2015 mod the best mod to install, or is there a better way of modding SH3 for realism, graphics, and game mechanics etc?

Second - Do I really need to go through those annoying lock gates at the docks?! They seem to have no sequence and will sometimes shut while I'm half way through them, I have yet to get out on patrol without hitting something in or around them for various reasons! Annoyed at having to look at smashed gauges every patrol (I seem to recall the depth gauge never smashed in Das Boot!)

Third - If I have Living 2015 mod already installed, what other mods does this already include, or what mods can I install over the top of it (that would make a difference, e.g. to improve the graphics)? I would certainly be interested in something to make best use of my screen resolution (I have a 27" monitor running at 2560x1440).

I notice little ! on the crew sometimes, I'm guessing this means they are tired and are less effective. I have read about the Commanders mod, can I safely install this on top of Living 2015?

Thank you for any advice!

The mega mods are fitted to your style of play. LSH is what we call an “eye candy” mod that looks great but the look serves no purpose in how the boat, enemy, or war plays out. And just to elaborate I mean it gives you great harbors and locks to pass through as you've said.

NYGM is not eye candy but a modifier to the boat physics, and how the enemy hunts you. I use this exclusively and love it. If you are looking for a challenge, this is your mod.

GWX is a good medium for both but I have encountered numerous CTD issues, and can back this up with the numerous message boards about it located here at Subsim.

Here is my mod list below, I have made a lot of customizations that are not listed, but it is as close to what i feel is realistic.

Only on the way out.

On the way back you can dick before entering the lock.

No.
This not a mod but an independent application.
This is already installed in your game as part of the installation.
The game should always be started from the the SH3commander exe.
Make a desktop shortcut or pin it to the task bar.

Thank you very much for the advice and welcome, plenty there for me to be getting on with!

Just one more quick question - I followed the LSH3 installation guide (installed to c:\SH3) and that all seems to be working fine, if I want to install another copy of SH3 to try other mods what's the best way to do this without disturbing my current LSH3 install? I have other drives I could install to, I'm just concerned about registry stuff etc.

Hi jm
The most important rule about multi copying is that it must be taken from a fresh copy.
My recommendation would be to uninstall LSH3.

Make a copy of your V15 games folder if you want to keep your saved games and re-name it V15 saved games or similar.

Uninstall SH3 from the Control Panels Programs and Features.
Run a registry cleaner and re-boot your system.
Post #70 How To Use The Free Registry Cleaner 'Ccleaner' > Pictorial > Includes Download Link

Install SH3 again this time making a copy of it and name it something like SH3 Pristine or SH3 Master.
Install Multi SH3 and copy and paste it into your SH3 master.
MultiSH3 > Already included in LSH3-2015 > Download includes full instructions.

Every SH3 game copy will need multi SH3 in it.
Each game needs a 3 digit unique identity.

Re-install LSH3 into the SH3 original.
Follow the LSH3 installation instructions which will take you
to the Naval Academy as before to create your v15 save game folder.
Go to where your original V15 saved games copy is, open it and copy the data folder which contains your career and saved games and paste into the new V15 folder.
Peter

The locks seem to be timed for about 2minutes and 20seconds. I use 2minutes to error in my favor.
approach first set of doors to about 200meters and then come to a full stop. a very slight drift < 1kt is good.

one set of doors will open for 2m20s
both set of doors closed for 2m20s
other set of doors will open for 2m20s
both set of doors closed for 2m20s
and so on

when you see the doors open that you need, go to 7kts you'll need this to get moving so to beat the timer. as boot gets about a 1/4 the way in go the full stop again and coast in, you'll be good. you might need to go to "back slow", to slow yourself down and not hit the other set of doors. try to come to a full stop. wait there between the doors for 2m20s. as soon as you see the other set of doors open go to 3kts and as soon as you see that you can make it out go to 7kts. to keep boot from drifting into the sides try to remain at 1kt

hope this helps, it works for me. alternative tactics welcome
the 2m20s is from open to close

Hi DS
Want to put your theory to the test, try the lock gates at St Nazaire.
