Just got back from a night out in the dark! Not kidding, 90% of the street lights around here are off.

Never good to learn of such things but take the positives, start looking after yersel more, it could have been closer to home.

I always think that way when someone in my peer group passes away.

Problem was Jim he was in good health, you just don't know when these things hit. Never the less it makes you think about yourself. Well as I suspected mix motions of shock and acceptance at work with a heavy fill in the air. And after work walking home I had to divert around a RTA!

Just a few more days ... isn't that where two 747's met each other on the runway?

Probably a lot safer now, uh?

On March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747 passenger jets, KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736, collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport), on the Spanish island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, killing 583 people in the deadliest accident in aviation history.
I sure hope so.

Been to Tenerife a couple of times since the above but next week our chosen destination is Gran Canaria.

GROUND FOG, LACK OF GROUND TAXI RADAR, A BOMB THREAT TO GRAN CANARIAS WHICH DIVERTED BOTH AIRCRAFT TO (overburdened) TENERIFE AND A LACK OF NOW-REQUIRED COCKPIT CREW-DYNAMIC COOPERATION NOTWITHSTANDING: ONE PRIMARY CAUSE WAS THE 5 second RADIO TRAFFIC HETERODYNE SQUEAL FROM TOO MANY KEYED MIKES(3) CAUSING THE KLM PILOT TO MISS A CRITICAL TRANSMISSION THAT THE RUNWAY WAS NOT CLEAR...
Quote:
Sounds on the CVR suggested that during the accident the Spanish control tower crew had been listening to afootball match on the radio and may have been distracted.
The transmission from the tower in which the controller passed KLM their ATC clearance was ambiguous and could have been interpreted as also giving take-off clearance. In support of this part of their response, the Dutch investigators pointed out that Pan Am's messages "No! Eh?" and "We are still taxiing down the runway, the Clipper 1736!" indicated that captain Grubbs and first officer Bragg had recognised the ambiguity (this message was not audible to the control tower or KLM crew due to simultaneous cross-communication);
The Pan Am had taxied beyond the third exit. Had the plane turned at the third exit as instructed, the collision would not have occurred...
.
https://aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/36074/is-there-a-solution-to-radio-interference The radio cross communication heterodyne problem still exists. http://www.askthepilot.com/shorttakes/bob-bragg/ Oddly a similar situation arose on Friday while sailing. Someone had left a radio somewhere in the greater Bay Area open on channel 16, the universal Coast Guard emergency/advisory channel; making a timely response to any vessel in distress problematic. The situation lasted all afternoon with constant static on a channel normally kept meticulously clear by the CG. As on our boat, each crewman carries a personal radio in his flotation vest's pouch(note antenna) pocket, and there is one affixed to the boat as well. An open mike implies a worst case scenario of someone, perhaps in the water...having gone over board; unable to speak but trying... so the situation is inherently serious.
EDIT: THE 'HETERODYNE' ISSUE IS STILL A PROBLEM.... I JUST CHECKED WITH MY COLLEGE TEAMMATE WHO RETIRED AS A DELTA CAPTAIN THIS YEAR.

Moira's become really bad at remembering to send birthday cards lately (usually those for my family). Last week she told me she'd forgotten to send one to my brother-in-law, and yesterday she told me she also just forgot my sister-in-law.

So this afternoon I went to TESCO to get a Belated Birthday card for her, and (would you believe it) they didn't have any! By now I was so furious with the world that I bought a Sorry You Are Leaving card, crossed out the "You Are Leaving" and scrawled underneath "Moira Forgot Your Birthday". Then inside, beneath where it said "We wish you well", I added "And we hope you get a birthday card on time next year".

Get a big calendar for the wall and, along with appointments etc, put in the B'days of everyone who matters. The memory thing just gets worse after 50-something...
