Default From SH5 to SH3?

Hey all,

My first experience with the Silent Hunter series was (sadly) SH5. Even with many of the great modifications it just doesn't seem to have the same authentic feel as SH3 (from what i see in "lets play videos").

I think my biggest issue is that i'm big on visual fidelity and the apparent difficulties getting my native resolution (2560x1440) working.

I know this may be a loaded questions, but would the more seasoned Silent Hunter vets recommend checking out 3? Thanks for the input and consideration.

I certainly would recommend it. From a fluid random campaign to assignments all over the world, from simple single-merchant ambushes to harrowing nighttime convoy battles, from empty seas for days on end to crowded harbors teeming with life, from the primitive Type II "dugout canoe" with its five torpedoes to the "workhorse" Type VII to the Mighty Type IX long-range beast to the futuristic "Electro-boot" Type XXI, SH3 has it all. You can have as little or as much to do and see as you like. With several major supermods, each one designed for a different experience, and SH3 Commander giving real historic names to the ships you sunk and more than 100 different merchant types to sink, SH3 is the only version that gives you everything.

I appreciate the insight Steve. Can anyone point me to a thread or particular modification / series of mods which are fan favorites?

Also, for a high resolution fix, try Ahnenerbe's WideGUI

Thanks guys! I've got GWX installed. I guess my biggest concern is past that what are the most popular / immerse mods and do i need to be enabling them in a specific order (like in SH5)?

As far as I'm concerned, there's no better immersion "mod" than SH3 Commander
You will need the extra config file for GWX, and I must say, the two together make for an awesome experience.

Yup, got it up and running! Question though, do i have to run through each tutorial before i can set out to sea?

Also, in terms of immersion i was also talking in regards to visual fidelity.

The most popular or immersive mods? You'll get a different list from every one of the thousands of people playing SH3. Some have a couple of special favorites and others (including myself) have a list longer than your arm. What do you consider "immersive"? What do you want from your experience?

I second that. Commander does for your career what a supermod like GWX does for your game. Can't live without it.

No. In the stock game you needed to run all the tutorials to start with 1500 renown. You didn't have to do any of them if you don't care about that. With GWX some of them are harder - much harder in the AA course. The good news is that you only have to pass one of them to get the full 1500. Do the Navigation course and you're good to go.

Fidelity in what respect? Some want super explosions. Others, like me, want to see the harbors look as real as possible. I don't care so much about the explosions, but I have to have the St Naz, Wilhelmshaven, and Schleuse mod. I need to wait for the gates on the locks to open, and to see all the different ships going about their business.

As I said, everybody has a different favorite.

You can skip the tutorials if you want. While you can get something out of them, I find it much more useful to learn by doing single missions. As far as graphical immersion, I can't contribute much more on that point as I run GWX at 1360x768 with Widescreen MaGui (my monitor won't run 1920x1080), so you likely already have me beat. Maybe check out Sailor Steve's LSH link above, as I believe it's the graphics king of the mega-mods. Do be aware that you must choose between either GWX or LSH, as they are not compatible with each other.

Thanks for the reply guys. I guess i want as much authetnticity / immersion as possible in terms of the following:

I came across this guys videos on youtube and i really like the feel he has (he has a mod list but im not sure if he has enabled them correctly / in the same order, etc):

Sound
Fidelity of the submarine interior and exterior, crew, merchant ships, etc
Effects
Water & weather
Geography (ports, terrain, etc)

things of this nature. I just am looking for an immersive and authentic experience.

I'm not sure if i should use GWX or something similar as a base mod and build off of that with other individual mods or simply use a super/mega mod alone.

For what its worth, im in the team speak now if anyone wanted to discuss via voice

I'd just download them all and give them a try one at a time. I read countless opinions on NYGM vs GWX but until I actually played both of them, I couldn't make a decision.

FM's New Interiors is the only mod that gives you a (nearly) full interior to walk through. That is what you saw in the video.

Effects
I use SH4 Effects For SH3, by Racerboy/TheDarkWraith for explosions and Torpedo Damage Final by Ocean Blue for good looking holes from both torpedoes and shells.

Water & weather
My favorite there is SH5 Water for SH3, by Rik007. Others have other preferences.

GWX or LSH3 give you the best experience there.

Yes, start with a supermod. Here is a good thread to look at for ideas.
