Default Night surface attack vs corvettes

I'm a NYGM user. And I never really try to be seen by escorts, but last night I attacked a convoy successfully and found myself attacked by a flower corvette.

For those that are new to SH3, corvettes are generally slow and you could for the most part out run them.

I was running from the one, middle of the night, when I notice that as soon as my stern was facing him between 150 - 210 degrees, at about 4500 meters it would lose me and begin a depth charge attack after so long.

I did this a couple of times in an attempt to attack the convoy a second time!

It just proves that your sillouette is very important in this game. Just something interesting for you guys.

It's difficult and result often is: ALAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARM!

Weather plays important role in NYGM. Some swell and it is possible to outrun corvette during daytime. During calm I have been able to maintain distance and wait for dusk, that is until diesels broke down...

bstanko6: Do you remember why type VII in NYGM can only make 15 to 16 knots? Historically 17+.

I don't know about corvettes, but...

One campaign, AGES ago it feels like, I was returning to Kiel from a patrol up in the straights between Scandinavia and Denmark, early war.

Towards the evening, I came across a very small convoy...two merchant ships, escorted by a lone Hunt I class. Mind you, I had a very rough run-in earlier with a British patrol, and at this time, I was repairing some damage while burying some men at sea (as per their request).

So, I proceeded to do one of the most stupid things I've ever done in Silent Hunter III...I engaged the destroyer on the surface. With a Type VII's 88mm gun.

I think the captain of that destroyer was absolutely shocked when I managed to destroy all of his gun emplacements with some well-placed shots. After that, I manned the flak gun and started taking out the light weapons, effectively neutralizing the ship. For some reason, instead of ramming me, he turned tail and ran at full speed, leaving me to sink those two freighters before returning home.

Somehow, we didn't lose anyone else in that little battle, and all of the men have one helluva sea story to tell now.

But I'm sure it can be done with corvettes too if you're feeling risky. They can only fire the main guns in about a 270-degree arc forward, and they're thinly armoured. Take out that gun, you should be good.

STRAND:

The type 7 had a lot of capabilities. It was up to the Machinist that ran the diesels to maintain and keep those engines running smooth. At the end of the war, as more experienced men were lost, younger, less experience machinists were called for duty, and probably could not cut the diesels to lean out and run smooth. Also, running top speed increases the risk of engine damage.

Just to add to the answer to
STRANDS question. NYGM makers focused on the realism not so much the eye candy. Which I think is why the type 7 at the outbreak of the war does not hit 17 knots. I believe there are 3 engine upgrades in the game. Understand that getting those upgrades takes a lot of ingame time. Once I got an upgrade and it took three months.
