Default Designate target for enemy aircraft?

Okay, this should be simple, but probably isn't. I wanted to start the Manilla raid in the middle of an air attack, but regardless if the planes are started 20 or 30 klicks away they apparently won't attack docked ships. Set up a freighter and destroyer cruising slowly past the docks (and why the hell ain't the docks visible in the mission editor map?!) and set a Val diver bomber to elite with a 3x500kg loadout, waypoints flying right over the freighter and destroyer. The can opens fire and shoots down the Val, but the dummy doesn't even try to dive bomb from 1000 or 500 meters, he just cruises past both ships like he's on a sightseeing tour. Career starts on Dec 9th, the crew of the Val didn't get the word that the war started? Other planes in the same mission coming in later will automatically attack the first US ship they fly over, is there some sort of time delay? Is there a way to make an aircraft attack a specific target? Hard to imagine they would have left that out.

I thought they just attacked the first target they saw. I doubt there is any way to get them to attack a specific target. Sounds strange.

Well, eventually I gave up and replaced the dive bombers with zeros that have an impossible bomb load (two choices both of which would overload a zero so it couldn't get off the ground, and probably bend the wing spars just by taxiing), at least they will attack anchored ships. For some reason the dive bombers just wouldn't do it, fly right over a dozen docked ships at any altitude like they were sightseeing.

Other delay is a really silly one - that irritating mission to photograph two escort carriers in an improbable anchorage at the far north end of Manila Bay. Bad enough by itself because of having to travel miles through shallow water and a godawful racket running over a torpedo net which is also in an improbable location, it's just plain ludicrous when you get that mission for a career start. Two Japanese escort carriers anchored long before the actual occupation, did they think we wouldn't notice? Anyway the paths and waypoints all had to be altered to miss that area or it screws up the mission, nothing to photograph if other US forces sink them intruders before you get there. You really SHOULDN'T get that mission before January 42, but since career start is a random choice for first mission, the possibility is always there so I gotta compensate for it.

Even more silliness, apparently a VAL dive bomber can pass right smack through the middle of a flight of F4F Wildcats and they completely ignore it.

I was wondering if there is any aerial combat in this game. I guess that answers that.

Don't know for sure, the VALs will dive bomb any US ship away from the docks but not ships in the docks. So I substituted zeros with bombs and those will happily bomb anything afloat, either underway or in the docks. Maybe if I change the US fighters with SBDs a dive bomber would attack a dive bomber.

Fighters are mostly for show anyway, as Jake Grafton said, "Fighter pukes make movies. Bomber pilots make HISTORY."

None at all. Not even in SH3 or 5...but I did make a patch for SH5 to allow aerial combat
