Default Newb and mods

Hi,
I've been learning dangerous waters for a while now. I'm still pretty confused about the game but I can see the underlying tactical potential this game has so I just keep on learning it because I love complex simulators tho I've only played lock on and black shark.
Now, I downloaded the LWAMI mod because what I understood, it adds some missing realism to the game.
But should I first learn to play 1.04 version of DW before playing that mod?
I must confess I didn't understand all the changes the mod makes, just thought if it's realistic it must be better (lol) but as I'm using the game manual to learn DW is LWAMI just messing with my head at this point of learning process?

I think you can safely go with LWAMI, no need to spend time on the 'stock' game first.
