Version 5 now released - hopefully fixes Blitzkreig's problem with starting the program: console re-enabled, so error messages will hopefully appear. I could not reproduce the problem at this end.

Also, support for releasing an assignment following KIA added.

Thanks. This is a great work, a masterpiece I am very exited to test it to the extreme. I get the error below while installing, I tried changing the compability mode to Win Xp, but then, the command prompt closes and nothing happens. Any advice ?

The dialog box is telling "ToolkitforKapitans has stopped working."

Thank you Aras - good job I re-enabled the console, now I can see where the error lies. Looks like a possible .INI file problem. I'll correct it and issue version 6.

P.S. I suspect that is what caused Blitzkrige's problem (wait for him to react to the spelling!)

Found the problem - missing 'flotilla=' line in the [Flotilla] section of the INI file (if I remove 'flotilla=' I get exactly the same error).

I'll got through the entire code and check that I set suitable defaults. If you are wanting to test this version [5], open ToolkitForCaptains.ini which will be in (probably) your Documents folder, in Application Data/File-Away and add

flotilla=

in the [Flotilla] section.

If there's no INI file, that's also a problem I'll fix. If you cannot wait, then here below is an empty set of entries.

Code:
[General]
message_file_path=
careers_base_path=
extract_date_from_logs=true
calculate_grid=false
just_receive=false
known_flotillas=
last_message_seq=

[TEMPLATES]
use=false
allow_bdu=true

[Flotilla]
receive=true
career=
user_name=
password=
is_flotilla_administrator=
forum_name=
last_message_seq=
flotilla=

[RTE]
career=
receive=
user_name=
password=
forum_name=

Version 6 released - this fixes the INI file problem (that is, if you are a brand-new user and the program has yet to create the file).

Also, the Set My Preferences -> Select the SH3 Careers directory button tries to actually display the correct location for the Careers directory rather than leaving you hunting around.

Unfortunately () the Select SH3 Messages file... doesn't - I need to query the registry to find out where SH3 is actually installed, and then try to guess the location of the data files. Reading the friendly "If you never read instructions" section of the web page will help (you, not me!).

Once you get the hang of it, it does work very well. The more users from your flotilla that will use it really makes it worthy of your time.

Have fun.

Okay. I think there is a major improvment to do : separate messages which are from different flotillas systems (ex : DEF or LWF). Because I'm going to receive a lot of messages from flotillas in which I'm not currently playing. This would be good to be able to choose from which flotilla we would like to receive messages.

If you use the flotilla section, you only get messages from your flotilla.

If you use the RTE section, you get messages from RTE (the sort-of 'public' flotilla) and any flotillas marked as 'public' - currently (for testing) that's Lone Wolf.
I like your suggestion for the public section, although I've tried to keep the 'just receive public messages' bit very simple: I will try to add it for the next version (for RTE).

I've found a bug which appears to block reception of messages (well, their display in SH3) - I introduced it by making the message header too fancy.
Will issue a correction ASAP.

It's not like this on Star Trek.

In fact, the bug causes problems with the messages file, so I've temporarily disabled Toolkit Access.

Thanks to CTU_CLAY for the error report.

Version 7 is now available and access to the system re-opened. My apologies for this.

Version 7 will correct the problems in the messages file (if you had problems with it) automatically.

The problem was an embedded newline in the middle of a message, breaking it into two and causing SH3 to stop reading messages from that point onwards.
If you have been using the Toolkit you will probably find that there will be a LOT of messages coming in-game over the next few days once the file is repaired and SH3 can read it successfully.
