I would call it a cover to keep the heat of the sun outside the cockpit before flying.

It might also be that I've got a different set of headphones on, because the old ones failed, but blimey, that P-47 was like being put in a barrel and strapped to the engine of a Sherman tank at full throttle through the Ardennes Nice amount of ammo though, shame about the gunsight

O.K. you got me.
 I really thought some Pilot used that thing as a cover for the cockpit during air shows (didn't notice that the photo was edited.... ).But it would be a great idea for a 47 cokpit cover.:p
