Default The Golden Question....which mod?

Ahoy mates!

I’ve been around a long time! I’m the original sailor who complained about the red triangles when Neal did his original silent hunter 3 review! Oh how the times have changed.

So I have come and gone over the years and I’ve bounced back-and-forth between silent hunter 3 and 5 for a while now. I used to be addicted to NYGM for its simplicity and attention to historical accuracy. Oh and when that patch came out to fix all those problems I was in heaven.

So here I am with a little bit of time on my hands again with an itch to scratch. It seems SH5 is superior in many ways but for some reason I keep coming back here. So I was just wondering if I could have an almost simple breakdown of all the major mods here now a days for SH3? For some reason I never really got into GWX.

Is living silent hunter similar to NYGM?

Just glancing through the thread I see it has the same patching. Has there been any more major fixes in the last....say... two years?

When you guys play SH3 which mod you prefer and if you could give me some reasons why ?

Or is SH5 (WOS) really the superior game now?

Any of the “Old Gang” around here that could help out I would appreciate it!

Sink Them All!

I recommend GWX or WAC 5.0.
GWX for simplicity and good realism.
Wac 5.0 for fantastic visuals and effects. Plus campaign is great. But it can be unstable and needs a moderate pc specs.

Interesting. I’ll check out WAC 5 for sure.

Why not LSH if I may ask? That’s the one that caught my eye.

First of all, if you played NYGM, you will have a shock when you will experience the loading times of WAC and LSH

Otherwise, they are both great mods, lots of nice visuals and top mods in both . Also, you can copy a "pristine" SH3 install in a separate folder(s) and install them both .

Of course SH5 looks better, especially now with supermods like Wolves of Steel, however, for me ( and i noticed other members saying the same thing), no other SH game matches the atmosphere and immersion of SH3 .

Major differences between WAC and LSH?

I wish had time to try them both but I don’t

Default A lttle reading required....

Like you I come and go here on Subsim...depending on what is happening in real life forgot and lost my first user name and pass word from 2000 in the dustbin of time.

I would not call SH5 superior to SH3, it has its share of ugly warts, its just newer with better graphics and some nice features not present in SH3. I have only just come back around to giving SH5 a second try because of the Wolves Of Steel mod. It is a massive improvement over the buggy mess SH5 was at release. I really enjoy using real navigation, but hate being limited to a type VII boat only. I do love the graphics, but I still am not a fan of the scripting in the campaign. I still find my personal preference to be for the gracefully aging SH3 and its dynamic campaign....I just find the immersion better for me

NYGM and GWX are old favorites and I still have them installed on my PC. I have always loved the large number of mods that allow you to shape either one of these supermods into what you want.

As far as my favorite mods for these I have to say that IAMBECOME's Merchant Fleet Mod and the complementing MFM skin Packs set up for SH3 Commander along with Sailor Steve's Ships Names mod run high on my list.

H.ise and Stiebler patches and SH3 Commander I consider a must have for both I absolutely love the options and the date function of SH3 Commander.

There are too many mods I like that I could list here, but I think the ones above rank high for most folks here...the rest are a matter of personal choice.

A last minute addition here.... read through this thread from a few years back. A number of people shared their JSGME mod list for NYGM and GWX. It is a good source for ideas as to what to try. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...creen+for+nygm

WAC 5.01, the newest of the supermods, has really impressed me and I am spending more and more time with it. The graphics are really amazing for such an old game and the detailed campaigns are really impressive. To get an informed idea of what WAC has to offer I would read over the Handbuch_manual_WAC5.0. Follow the link below. Scroll down to the link for "All Wac Related Files" in the 4th post and that will take you to the manual download...plus others of interest. One post above mentioned that WAC can be unstable...so far it has been rock steady for me and no CTD's...but like they say your experiences may vary.

Living Silent Hunter III 2015 Edition I just started trying so I really can not give much of an opinion on other then to say the graphics are great. I would read over the LSH3 MiniManual. The supermod creators give you some good detail about what the mod offers. I am not sure if you can download the MiniManual it came as part of the Huge file download that is LSH. I also believe that they are working on a newer version.

Both of these new supermods require a decent PC...be sure to check the PC requirements they need. I don't think you would regret installing which ever one you choose.

Geezs that was long winded...but I hope it helps.

I’m a huge fan of all SH series, and have all them installed on my « old » PC.

I played SH3 vanilla when it first came out, then SH4 when it came out, and SH5 later on, but never vanilla game.
Today I have SH3 GWX, SH4 FOTRS and TMOwtw, SH5 TWOS.

I prefer SH3 & SH5 mainly for the Atlantic theater. But i had some good time hunting in Pacific too with SH4...

All 3 Silent Hunter have their good points and bad points, so it’s more subjective and personal taste to say wich one is the best.
Looking at the playing time spent on each one, SH5 is coming far before the others here.
Maybe because TWOS is the most complex and difficult to play (real nav, enigma etc)
The scripted campaign is really well done, and let us some liberty nevertheless.
As for SH3, the ambiance is really nice, enhanced by amazing graphics.
After all those years, i’m Still discovering little nice details and/or features!

The thing is, when you got the satisfaction of some tonnage sunk in real nav, it’s difficult to go back into easy settings

On side note, the most difficult escorts to deal with, are by far in SH4 TMO/FOTRS.

As someone who plays most SH5 TWoS, and someone who contributed to TWoS, I have to say... not really.

Don't get me wrong, SH5 TWoS is great for Type VII action in the North Sea, Baltic, Atlantic, Mediterranean, Arctic, and Carribean, but SH3 with GWX offers a lot more options. Type IXs, type IIs, type XXIs, the Black Sea campaign against the Russians, the August 1939 start date, etc.

Do yourself a favour and play both
