Default U.S. says did everything possible to help Italy cyber investigation

Quote:
ROME (Reuters) - The United States has denied suggestions it undermined an investigation into a massive data breach at the Italian cybersecurity firm Hacking Team, saying it did everything it could to help in the case.

A Milan magistrate last week recommended shelving an investigation into six people who were suspected of orchestrating the 2015 data theft.

A senior judicial source criticized U.S. officials for not handing over a computer belonging to a key suspect, saying it might have contained information vital to the probe.

Not "Russian hackers" - no need to probe further.

We're the good guys remember? We don't hack, what we investigate and reveal is strictly for the benefit of freedom and democracy.

Oooohhh. Pretty lights... I'm persuaded...

Is this another one of those cases where a company / entity discovers a year or two ~after-the-fact~ that they've been compromised? And only after an audit?
That's what astounds me about a lot of these data "breaches". No one breached anything (usually). They drove an 18 wheeler through the 8-lane information highway, lights all on, stereo on full-blast and the horn a-blaring. No one noticed until much later... sigh.
