Really bad day at the office. On it's third run this Japanese tin can blew off my rudder and flooded my aft torpedo room. Unable to turn, and with heavy flooding, all I could do was surface, run away in one direction at 14kts and hose his bridge with 20mm. Unfortunately he caught up to me after a 15 minute chase...

He eventually ran up along side me and I proceeded to pump about 10 rounds of 3" into him until he was burning and decided to turn away trailing smoke at about 3kts.

Unfortunately I was now stuck in the East China Sea with no rudder and no way to get home.

I came across a Jap Sub on the surface. (TMO WTW Juy 1945) My first clue was a war ship sonar report but no visual or radar sighing. As I got closer he came into view.

I was able to sink him with the 4th torpedo. Strange thing was he never tried to submerge but did fire at my periscope.

Life aboard the USS Drum, July 1942

USS Drum on patrol near Japan.

The forward deck gun points into the sunset

Waves splash over her deck, making it hazardous

She may seem like a lonely creature in the vast ocean, but deep inside is life...

Men on the bridge look for prey as well as predators

The helm keeps the boat on a true course.

In the conning tower, the sonar man listens for propeller sounds and hears something...

Next to him, the radar operator spots the signs of rapidly approaching ships and aircraft!

The captain orders a crash dive! The planesmen quickly begin a dive...

One puts the bow planes down, while the other puts the aft planes up.

Reaching a depth of 160 feet, the planesman keeps an eye on the boat's depth gauge.

The dive officer checks his charts

He says to prepare a coded contact report.

The radio room is set up.

After consulting all his officers, the captain decides to shadow the contacts until nightfall.

He retires to his bunk to take a quick nap... and dream about his sweetheart back home..............

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did taking the screenies and turning them into a story!

Cheers,
8Q

I would keep an eye on that man, Skipper!

You say, you're near Japan - but are you really sure about that? The map he appears to study so hard is of San Pedro Bay, Southern California!

Something's clearly not right here!

But nice shots, btw.!
