Default Perry v 2 Kilo's (AAR)

So this afternoon i thought i would unwind, haven't played DW a lot over the last few years but i thought i would take the Perry out and give her a spin.

Chasing down a Kilo

The Perry is a great ASW platform not so good against surface units and limited capability against AAW but if you know how to fight the ship you can use your weapons and assets to give you that edge even against submarines.

Now what i used to do in the Akula was to try and spook the Perry works with almost all the submarines, fire off in random directions missiles those that got engaged told you where the Perry was, downside to that tactic was you also gave away your position and it was easy to locate you unless you flanked in a random direction for 10 minuets even so you still well inside a detection range.

So once i figured out the subs i was talked into operating the surface vessel and found it a challenge and a radical departure from what i had known before.

Today's mission see's me put against two Kilo class submarines in the Persian gulf civilian traffic is moderate, now this can be both a benefit and hindrance to you, the kilo can hide under the ship meaning to attack it you run the risk of hitting a civilian ship, or they get close by and use the wash from the screw to basically screw up your detection equipment that method also limits their capability its worth noting.

So to plan out my engagement bear in mind i have loads of dynamic locations set in this map and each time i load the mission the submarines will not be in the same place twice show truth is off but i am working in an area 21nm in radius

Now most of my working out is done by hand, i make a dry wipe copy of the nav map and also use another sheet to plot an attack run or work out time / distances etc looks something like this.

My radar is on due to the civilian traffic i don't want anything bumping into me, i layout a barrier search pattern as shown by the crosses on the map each cross is no more than 9nm away from each other the sonarbouys will be dropped on these crosses and it will be executed by two MH60's

Now normally down the middle of the row i will drop another series of buoy's but because of traffic and time constraints i cant afford to do that a typical pattern will see a spread of 5 buoys in a sort of circle side to side 18nm with a buoy 4.5nm in the middle which will normally be a dicass buoy with VLAD on the outside, but this is a barrier search.

As you can see the Helo's are dropping the buoys and they are going hot pretty quick now it takes time to sort the wheat from the chaff and the contacts can be very quiet indeed the Kilo is no exception she is a very quiet boat.

The ASTAC screen says it all using the helo's to go out and do the distance work they are the key asset in any ASW search they are also very useful in forward observation and also AEW, i have used these to direct gunfire from the Perry's 5 inch and also used the penguin missile against the enemy ship as well (betasom should recall that) look after the helo's especially if your adversary is a submarine.

Above you can see we have detected a Kilo and he is very close aboard my best estimate was 3200 yards well within his kill range, however i am at 4 knots and sat behind a noisy fishing boat so i don't think the AI picked me up (tasked to attack me)

I am that close i have him on my hull sonar arrays and decided to chase him down and go active, so i kick her up to 29 knots with a pounding from the sonar in the sea state 4 conditions

here you can see i ran over the top turned around and slowed back to 4 knots and fired the ships port side torpedo

The result is in no doubt after a couple of misses and changing course to avoid torpedoes two fresh torpedo take out the first kilo, it wont be long until the 2nd is also dealt with by my two helo's she is much further down south

Conclusion this mission took 4 hours to complete but both tasks were completed both Kilo's were taken out with no loss to the ship nor to civilian traffic.

BTW Dangerous Waters MP community is still active but we use only latest RA version.
Now i havent much time so we usually play at Fridays and Saturdays.
