Default Playing On External CD/DVD Drive?

I just recently purchased a new laptop.
It is a combination work and gaming laptop.
has Pentium i7 with 8 gigs Ram
Nvidia 1650 graphics with 4 gigs ram
Windows 10.
3.0 USB Ports
HDMI port for playing on large screen

However the newer laptops do not come with the usual CD/DVD reader installed.
Can S.H. 4 or any of the older games I own such as Dangerous Waters be played using an external CD/DVD reader?
If so how fast would it need to read in order to prevent lag?

I’m quite sure you can play with an external reader

Myself i don’t have any CD/DVD reader on my new PC.
Hopefully, had the original files saved on an external drive, so just copy/paste did the trick
Don’t Have to let the disc in the reader to play anyway...

If you have v1.3 or earlier on disk, you had to have the disk inserted, but after you install the game (don't forget to install DirectX v9 & the Windows Media Codec files), if you update it with the Official v1.4 patch from Ubisoft Romania, (hosted here on the SubSim downloads section), you won't need the disk. All it did anyway was license verification, while the game ran from your hard drive, as Fifi mentions. Better still would be to upgrade to v1.5 with the Uboat Missions add-on, which you do have to pay for (and can be difficult to find), or by purchasing a "Gold" edition, which is the whole ball of wax, put together as version 1.5 - you will have a better selection of mods to choose from by using v1.5

OK so I already had the latest (U-boat) version bought and waiting to reload on Amazon.
Downloaded with no problem I just can't get the game to finish loading up.
Every time is says it's loaded nothing comes up when I go to start it and I don't have any files showing in the left hand start bar.
My new System is a:
Asus Rog Strix
Intel core i7 with 8 gigs ram
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 with 4 gigs video ram
512 SSD drive

Not sure what the problem is.

I found the file in:
Program Files(x86)/Ubisoft/Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific

When I try to launch it from the included application file I get the following message:

"The code execution cannot proceed because d3dx9_32.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem."

Any ideas what's going on?

OK.
Completely erased the file I found and reloaded game.
Everything loaded fine. Game is playing fine.
One problem.
With all the video selection choices in the graphics selection for the game which one do I use.
My laptop is plugged into a 1080p/60hz refresh rate 39" insignia TV.
Looks great but one problem. I can't get it off the old style full screen and go to widescreen to fit the t.v. Was able to do it on my older system but can't remember how.

Your original install was missing the older DirectX v9.0c files, but you're fine now. As for the screen size (resolution), if you will always play the game with the computer attached to the TV, you will want to match that in the game. Since you mention it being a 1080p Plasma, I will guess that yours is like mine, and has a "Native" resolution of 1920x1080, which is a 16:9 widescreen.

If you right-click on your Windows desktop, and choose "Display Settings" in Win10, and you'll see a drop-down box for "Resolution" (unless you've got Win7, then there's a choice for that directly from the right-click on the desktop). If you don't see "1920x1080 (recommended)" in that window, then set it to that. If you used the "Multiple Displays" and "Advanced Settings" section to set things up, you should go through that area. My Win10 laptop can connect to our 1080p TV via HDMI, and I've got it set through that "automatically", that when I plug in the HDMI cable, it picks up the 1080p TV right off, and changes the desktop settings to match. Very nice.

Once you have the display set to what you want on the Windows side, open the game and get to the main menu. From there, choose the "Options" and then "Graphic Settings" choices. At the top of the next page is the "Game Resolution" drop-down box. Generally speaking, the higher resolutions are towards the bottom of the list, but they sometimes won't show the correct ones, unless you've set the display correctly in Windows prior to starting the game. You should find a "1920x1080" setting or two in there. You might have a choice for a 40mHz and a 60mHz setting, but mine only shows a 60mHz choice. I don't know why, since my monitor does refresh at 40, but functions OK at the 60 setting, apparently just ignoring the "push" to go higher. You'll have to re-start the game for the changes to take effect after you "Apply Settings", "Are you sure?", "OK" you're way back out.

Hi guys
A portable dvd drive/reader which plugs into a USB port can be picked up from Amazon for under £20.
The installation process will give you a browse button where you can install the game on any drive available.
