Default GWX - Enemy not Pinging Us Sir

Really enjoying my return to SH3 - loving the hires mod, the new radio traffic, new ships, more detail - game is a beaut.

But wondering - usually escorts ping me, but currently 3 of them are tag-teaming me, pinpoint accuracy, but with no pings - even as they approach? Passive sonar could not do that back then, so is this a game or GWX bug?

This is an hour plus of depth charging - ships steer right in on me, regardless if at silent running or not - but no pinging noises. Probably just a sound bug?

ah man - i finally lost them after 2 hours, they fired starshell about 2 miles away - flanked over there, then i switched from ahead slow/silent running to standard to get away and they starshelled right back over me again - rushed over and are back depth charging me again. No sonar!!

This is 1941, 140m depth, silent running...

Silent running doesn't mean you're silent to them. Cut your speed to 1 knot/50 rpms to be as silent as you can. But watch your depth at that speed as it will change over time.
Also don't forget your profile in relation to the escorts.

no i get that - my question was more wondering how they were pinpointing me so accurately with passive only - i.e. why are they not pinging? Is it a bug - 1941 passive hydrophones were not able to gauge position and depth, asdic was only way of calculating depth i think?

Yeah, I figured you knew as much just covering the easy bases first. Sorry, don't have an answer to the root of your question; that is strange.
