HMS Chesterfield (Royal Navy) The fleet messenger was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean Sea 42 nautical miles (78 km) north east by east of Malta (36°17′N 15°13′E) by SM UC-52 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of four of her crew.
Denbigh Hall (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 90 nautical miles (170 km)) west south west of the Bishop Rock, Isles of Scilly (49°00′N 8°02′W) by SM U-55 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.

Shameful bombing of British hospitals at Etaples, etc., outside war zone, by German airmen; 300 casualties.

Air raid on London by over 20 Gothas; considerable damage, 49 killed, 177 injured; 5 raiders destroyed.

Southern Front

At Capo Sile (north-east corner of Venetian Lagoons) Italian storming party captures and holds Austrian advanced positions.

Naval and Overseas Operations

In East Africa General Edwards occupies Nanungu without opposition; Germans retire south-west towards Mahua.

Ship Losses:

Forsøk (Norway) The trawler was sunk in the Barents Sea south west of Cape Kanin Nos Russia by SM U-22 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.
Kirstin Jensen (Denmark) The schooner was shelled and sunk in the Mediterranean Sea 40 nautical miles (74 km) off Cape Palos, Murcia, Spain by SM UB-50 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.
Snowdon (United Kingdom) The collier was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean Sea 84 nautical miles (156 km) south of Malta by SM U-63 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of two crew.

U.S. Army Major Harold M. Clark Jr. and Sergeant Robert P. Gay make the first inter-island flight in Hawaii, flying from Fort Kamehameha on Oahu to the island of Maui. From there they fly to the main island of Hawaii, where they crash on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Uninjured, they will wander for a week before finding help.

1030 Douglas Cooke and Stanley Masding score their second victory of the day, another Pfalz D.III. Victory number 13 for Cooke; number 5 for Masding. This is also the last aerial victory for both men. Both will survive the war. Nothing else seems to be known of Cooke's life other than that he lived until 1955. I can find nothing about Masding at all.

1030 German ace Otto Köhnnecke, in an Albatros D.V, shoots down a Bristol F.2b for victory number 18.

1035 English RAF pilot David Weston and observer Ernest Deighton, in Bristol F.2b C4763, are credited with shooting down two Pfalz D.IIIs. Victories 5 and 6 for Weston; 4 and 5 for Deighton.

1040 American RAF pilot August Iaccaci and English observer Arthur Newland, in Bristol F.2b C859, shoot down a Pfalz D.III. Victory number i for Iaccaci; number 2 for Newland. Arthur Iaccaci is the younger brother of Paul Iaccaci, who scored his first victory the previous day.

1040 German ace Fritz Pütter, with Jasta 68, shoots down SE.5a C6449 for victory number 23. 1st Lt E.M. Hammer (USAS) is killed.

1040 David Weston and Ernest Deighton score their third kill of the day, another Pfalz D.III. Victory number 7 for Weston; number 5 for Deighton.

1110 German ace Paul Billik, in an Albatros D.Va, shoots down Sopwith Dolphin C4017 for victory number 17. Maj A.D. Carter is taken prisoner.

1840 German ace Karl Menckhoff, in an Albatros D.V, shoots down a SPAD for victory number 26.

1845 French ace Albert Deullin, in a SPAD XIII, shoots down an Albatros D.V for victory number 20. This is Deullin's last aerial victory. He will survive the war but die in a flying accident in May 1923.

Air War:

On the evening of May 19th 38 Gotha and 3 Riesenfkugzeug bombers set out on the largest airplane raid on Britain of the entire war. German records say 1500 kg of bombs are dropped on southern England, killing 49 people and inguring 177. British anti-aircraft guns and night fighters claim six of the bombers and one more is forced to land on British soil. This will be the last heavier-than-air raid on Britain until 1940.

Ship Losses:

Chatham (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean Sea 80 nautical miles (150 km) south west of Cape Matapan, Greece (34°51′N 21°34′E) by SM U-32 ( Austro-Hungarian Navy). Her crew survived.

0807 Serbian pilot Tadja Sondermayer, flying for the French Air Service with Spa 3, shoots down a German two-seater for victory number 1.

0823 German naval pilot Theodor Lodeman, with SeeFrontStaffel 2, shoots down a Bristol F.2b for victory number 2.

0825, German naval pilot Reinhold Poss, with SFS 2, shoots down a Bristol F.2b for victory number 3.
Who shot who is unknown, but the two Bristols are B1241, Lt C.G. Scobie and wnd Lt J.F. Hudson both killed; C839, Lt K.O. Millar and 2nd Lt S. Davidson both killed.

0910 German pilot Vfw Ehrhardt (no first name given), with Jasta 32, shoots down an SE.5a for victory number 1.

1100 German pilot Hans Holthusen, flying with Jasta 30, shoots down an SE.5a for victory number 1.

1850 Four American 103rd Aero SPAD XIII pilots share a victory over an Albatros D.V:

Hobart Amory Hare Baker, victory number 1.
Christopher Ford, victory number 3.
Charles Wilcox, victory number 2.
This is Hobart Baker's only aerial victory. Prior to the war he was a college ice hockey player, and was so famous he was one of the first group of inductees to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and the only American on that first list. He will survive the war only to die in a flying accident with his transfer paper in his coat pocket. His death is the subject of a little controversy.

The two DH.9s are:
B7604, Lt R.F.C. Metcalfe and 2nd Lt D.R. Bradley land safely on their own side of the lines.
B7661, Lts H.E. Tansley and N.B. Harris are taken prisoner.

German naval pilot Ltn Tinschert (no first name given), in an Albatros D.V with MFJ 1, shoots down a Bristol F.2b for victory number 3.

German pilot Hans Viebig, with Jasta 57, ahoots down Sopwith Camel D9539 for victory number 4.

Raid attempted on Paris by about 30 German machines, but only one reaches capital.

Southern Front

Increased artillery fighting along Piave; an attack at Capo Sile bridgehead repulsed.

Naval and Overseas Operations

Air-raids on Zeebrugge; a German destroyer sunk in harbour.

In East Africa British engage enemy between Nanungu and Mahua; capture guns and ammunition, drive Germans westward.

Political, etc.

U.S. Army in France announces it will issue its troops 0.4 ounces of tobacco and 10 rolls of cigarette papers as part of daily rations.

Ship Losses:

Meran (Norway) The sailing vessel was sunk in the North Sea off Songvår, Vest-Agder by SM U-86 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.
Red Rose (United Kingdom) The coaster was sunk in the English Channel approximately 30 nautical miles (56 km) north of Cap d'Antifer, Seine-Maritime, France (50°04′N 0°20′W) by SM UB-57 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of eleven of her crew.

HMS Moldavia (Royal Navy) The armed merchant cruiser, operating as a troopship, was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel off Beachy Head, East Sussex (50°24′N 0°26′W) by SM UB-57 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of 56 lives.
Skaraas (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 1 nautical mile (1.9 km) off Black Head, Cornwall (49°59′N 5°06′W) by SM UB-74 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of nineteen of her crew.
SM UB-52 (Kaiserliche Marine) The Type UB III submarine was torpedoed and sunk in the Strait of Otranto (41°36′N 18°52′E) by HMS H4 ( Royal Navy) with the loss of 32 of her 34 crew.

Italy: The United States government approves the assignment of American pilots who have been training in Italy to start serving aboard bombers with the Italian Air Force until a place can be found for them in the US Air Service.

0700 New Zealander AFC pilot Carrick Stewart Paul and Australian observer William James Alexander Weir, flying Bristol F.2b C4627 with the Australian Flying Corps, shoot down an Albatros D.V. Victory number 1 for both.

0715 Paul Carrick and William Weir score their second victory, another Albatros D.V.

0715 Two French pilots from Spa 81 share the destruction of a German observation balloon:
Adrian Leps, victory number 9.
Paul Santelli, victory number 2.

0930 German ace Dieter Collin, in an Albatros D.V, shoots down DH.9 D6516 for victory number 10. 2nd Lt G.E. Ffrench and Cpl F.Y. McLauchlan are both killed. Collin claims this as a Bristol F.2b.

0940 German ace Josef Jacobs, in an Albatros D.V, shoots down an SE.5a for victory number 17.

1110 German pilot Heinrich Seywald, flying with Jasta 23, shoots down Armstong-Whitworth FK.8 C8626 for victory number 1. Lt T.H. Crossman lands safely on his own side of the lines; Lt L.C. Spence is wounded, later dyying from his wounds. Seywald claims this as a Bristol F.2b.

1150 German pilot Roman Schneider, with Jasta 79, shoots down a Bristol F.2b for victory number 2.

Government issues statement exposing Sinn Fein intrigues with Germany and the revolutionary movement in Ireland.

Canada passes an Act granting women the right to vote in federal elections. Asian and aboriginal women are excluded.

Ship Losses:

HMT Gabir (Royal Navy) The naval trawler struck a mine laid by UC 17 (Nikolaus von Lyncker) and sank in the North Sea of Pakefield, Suffolk with the loss of two of her crew.
Ruth Hickman (United Kingdom) The schooner was scuttled in the Atlantic Ocean 60 nautical miles (110 km) north north west of Graciosa, Azores, Portugal (40°05′N 28°30′W) by SM U-62 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.
HMT Yucca (Royal Navy) The naval trawler struck a mine laid by UC 17 (Nikolaus von Lyncker) and sank in the North Sea off Pakefield (52°26′N 1°48′E) with the loss of seven of her crew. by SM UC-17 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.
